2011 VOLLEYBALL DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
This weekend Chestermere will be hosting the 2011 Rocky View Divisional Volleyball Championships at the Volleydome. Our three teams are excited about playing in the championship. Check the Rocky View Athletics web-site for the full schedule.

VARSITY BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL WIN GOLD
This past week, the Lakers played their final league match of the 2011 season against George McDougall. The winner of this match would take possession of first place going into the Divisional playoffs. After taking the first set, the boys fell short in the 2nd and 3rd sets. With the 4th set being a must win for the Lakers, the team fought hard to win and force a 5th and deciding game. The boys showed no mercy, and took a commanding lead in the 5th set, eventually winning 15-8! Scores were 25-17, 20-25, 24-26, 25-16, 15-8. Next the team would play in the Cochrane Cobra’s Invitational tournament on Friday and Saturday. Friday was not a strong day for the team, and they struggled to a 1-2 record for the day. Saturday was a different story, and though it started slow, the boys picked up momentum and finished 4th after round robin play. The first round of playoffs had them beating Bert Church in 2 sets. They then upset the tournament hosts, Cochrane, in 2 sets. In the final they faced Foothills Composite from Okotoks whom they played (and lost to) earlier in the day. Both teams were tired from a long weekend of volleyball, but the Lakers persevered, and won another tournament final in 2 straight sets. Congratulations to the Senior Boys on finishing first at the tournament and in league play! Good luck at Divisionals this weekend!

VARSITY GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Last Wednesday the girls played very well in defeating the George Mc Dougall Mustangs 3-0 in league play. The team was idle on the weekend but will be working hard to prepare for this weekend’s Divisional Championships at the Volleydome. Best of luck ladies.

JV GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
The JV girls’ lost, in league action, to the Mustangs of George Mc Dougall, last Wednesday, 3-1 but all games were close. The team looks forward to finishing their season at the League Championship, this weekend. Best of luck in your tournament.

COWBOYS FOOTBALL EARNS BRONZE

The Cowboys had their best week of the year. On Tuesday they dominated the Highwood Mustangs, in an exhibition game, 22-0. Brad Taubert scored two touchdowns and Jesse Seddon added one. All team members contributed to this win. On Friday the Cowboys hosted the Bert Church Chargers in the Rocky View League bronze medal game. Playing under the lights is proving to be a blessing for the team. The Cowboys got off to a great start on a 68 yard touch down toss from Hunter Karl to Brad Taubert. For the 2 point conversion the roles were reversed as Taubert hit Karl in the end zone, Taubert rounded out the scoring with another touchdown and a single point. With some injuries the team had to dig deep to earn the victory. The defense made some key plays in the 4th quarter, particularly. Hunter Karl who snagged two interceptions late in the game to seal the victory. Congratulations to the Cowboys on your bronze medal. The team closes out the season with an exhibition game at home on Tuesday against the Highwood Mustangs.

BUSY GYM
November is our busiest month of the year when it comes to gym use. With volleyball completing their seasons and basketball starting, as well as community soccer, there is virtually no free time in either of our gyms. We have close to 200 practices during November.

BASKETBALL TRYOUTS

JV and Varsity basketball tryouts start this week. Please check the web-site for the schedule.

[box] ATHLETE OF THE WEEK-DRAKE BRUNEY
Drake Bruney proved to be the most consistent player for the Lakers this past week. He has improved tremendously as a middle blocker and attacker, and had a key role in the boys’ victories against George McDougall on Wednesday, and in all games at the Cochrane tournament over the weekend. Drake will be a huge part of all future success for the Lakers, especially in the divisional championships this weekend. Great job Drake!

Rookie, Hunter Karl had an outstanding week with the Cowboys. Last Tuesday, against Highwood, he had several great catches to help the team to a 22-0 win. In the league bronze medal game,on Friday, he threw a TD pass on the first play of the game and made several big plays, offensively and defensively. His two 4th quarter interceptions were keys to the Cowboys earning a tough 15-12 victory.[/box]
