MVPs named at volleyball banquet

CHESTERMERE HOSTS LEAGUE VOLLEYBALL BANQUET
Chestermere was the host of the 2011 Rocky View League Volleyball Banquet on Monday, December 5. Over 400 athletes, coaches, managers, parents and guests filled the Wilson gym for this special event. All-stars, heart awards and major awards were presented. For Chestermere it was a record haul for major awards. This year was the first time Chestermere athletes earned three major awards. An excellent meal was prepared by Ms. Penner and her Culinary Arts students. Thanks to Ms. Everson and Ms. Kumlin for organizing this event. You did Chestermere proud.

ALEX COOK NAMED BOYS’ LEAGUE MVP
Alex Cook, was named the Rocky View Division MVP at the Awards Banquet on Monday night. Alex leaves CHS as a divisional and zone champion and one of the top players to ever compete in Rocky View. Alex has “no regrets” with his or his team’s never quit attitude. Alex dominated on the volleyball court unlike any other player. His 6′-6″ stature was an obvious sign of his domination, but his high skill level and knowledge of the game are what really helped him be the force he was against his opponents. Alex will now continue on with his grade 12 year by playing with his club team, the Dinos, and then will suit up for the University of Calgary for the 2012-13 season. Congratulations Alex! We wish you good luck as you continue with his volleyball career at the next level.

KAYLA NIXON NAMED GIRLS’ LEAGUE MVP
It is not very often that a grade 11 student wins the league MVP so this is indeed a prestigious achievement. Kayla Nixon is an outstanding athlete, leader and person and has worked extremely hard over the past few years to become the player she is today. Without Kayla’s leadership, skill and overall effort the Chestermere Lakers would not be the team they were this year. Kayla’s heart and desire to win pushed the Lakers to win most of their league games, tournaments and eventually finishing 2nd in the Divisional finals. Kayla is a very talented young lady and, although small in stature, all her hard work has finally paid off. Great work Kayla!

SHANTELLE JONASSEN NAMED LEAGUE ROOOKIE OF THE YEAR
This was Shantelle Jonassens first year on the Varsity team and she proved to be a very valuable asset. She was one of the team’s most skilled players, doing an outstanding job in the pressure situations. Her overall skill and work ethic in practices and game situations made her the premiere first year player in the league. Shantelle had an outstanding year for Chestermere, and the Lakers are very grateful to have her coming back for another strong season next year.  Great job Shani!

ROCKY VIEW LEAGUE ALL-STARS
Congratulations to the following CHS athletes who were named league all-stars at the banquet on Monday: Laura Costello, Brady van Gelderen and Shamus Moore. Being named a league all-star in the competitive Rocky View Volleyball League is a significant achievement.

ROCKY VIEW LEAGUE HEART AWARD WINNERS
Congratulations are also due to the following Laker volleyball players for their Heart Award selections: Taylor Nelson, Meagen Lastockin and Brad Avery. Congratulations on your outstanding attitude and commitment to volleyball

VOLLEYBALLERS PLAY IN ZONE ALL-STAR GAME
Congratulations to 7 Laker volleyball players who were selected to play in last week’s South Central Zone All-Star Volleyball Game. On the boys’ side Alex Cook, Brady van Gelderen, Colby Williams and Shamus Moore were selected. Named to the girls’ game were Meagen Lastockin, Paige Elias and Amanda Mackey. This is the most ever players selected from our team so congratulations to all players and your coaches. The game was played at George Mc Dougall on November 30 and featured the top grade 12 players in the zone, competing in an east-west format.
