Rocky View County, Alberta – At their regular meeting on September 27, 2011, Rocky View County Council approved a budget adjustment to acquire a water licence with the Western Irrigation District (WID) giving access to 2500 acres per square foot (ac-ft) or 3,083,704 cubic meters (m3) of raw water. The water will provide future potable water service to the Conrich region.
The agreement with the WID secures a long term supply of raw water for the Conrich area. The raw water supply is being leased on a demand basis and costs will be recovered through the user rates and connection agreements. The allocation supports the Conrich Community Development Strategy and addresses the significant need for a secure water supply in this closed basin.
“This new agreement was vital to securing the long term future growth of the Conrich area,” says Reeve Rolly Ashdown. “With the development of water resources in the area, future customers will be able to access safe and drinkable water, opening up new growth opportunities.”
Rocky View County built the Graham Raw Water Reservoir and Treatment Facility in 2010, located adjacent to Graham Creek in east Rocky View. Phase one of the Conrich Water Strategy includes a new potable transmission main, treatment plant upgrades, raw water storage upgrades and a local reservoir and pump station built to facilitate the treatment and delivery of this water to future customers in the area. The total cost of the phase one is estimated at $25.2 million.
