VARSITY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Varsity Girls have been dealing with sickness and injury the last while and it is a challenge to the team. The Lady Lakers played in the McDougall Tournament this past weekend, in Airdrie. In the opening round the team had to work very hard to post a 60-50 victory over a scrappy Olds team. Yasmene Saghir led the Lakers with 28 points and 21 rebounds. Richelle Rawlyk had a strong outing with 19 points and 15 steals. With only a one game break and a depleted sqad the girls could not muster the energy to match the fresh Camrose Trojans, losing 87-51. Rachel Cooke led the way with 15 points. On Saturday, with only six healthy players, the Lady Lakers played one of their best games of the year, defeating Pearson 74-42. High scorers were Yasmene with 30, Rachel with 20 and Brittany Cavers with 8. The team finished third in the tournament. Player of the game awards were presented to Katelyn Dickin, Richelle and Rachel. The tournament all-star went to Yasmene. On Wednesday the team hosts Mc Dougall, in a league game at 7:45 and looks forward to hosting the Lady Lakers Invitational on the weekend.

The JV Lady Lakers resumed their basketball season after the exam break last week. On Tuesday the team put their 21-0 record on the line versus an extremely tough Bishop Carroll squad. In a competitive contest that saw the lead change hands eight times, the Lady Lakers could not hold on against the talented Cardinals and lost their first game of the season. On Wednesday night the girls travelled to Cochrane to play the always-tough Cobras. The girls regained their top form, played hard as a team, and cruised to a 73-42 victory. The team took to the road and went down to Claresholm on Friday evening. Their first opponent was Winston Churchill from Lethbridge. The Lady Lakers jumped out to an early lead and continued their hard play throughout the entire forty minutes en route to a convincing 84-49 win. Saturday morning meant a semi-final date with the host Cobras from Willow Creek. In a fierce battle that was decided only in the last two minutes of a frantic fourth quarter, the Chestermere girls stay composed and held on to win by a score of 52-46 and moved on to the tournament final. It was a dream matchup with McCoy in the Championship game on Saturday night. Both the Lady Lakers and Colts started hard and played great defense. Neither squad would lead by more than two baskets at any point in the first half with the score tied at 27 at halftime. The girls, although tired and having suffered a couple of key injuries, gave it everything they had in the most exciting fourth quarter of the season. In a finish worthy of a championship final, the Lady Lakers hit some clutch shots down the stretch and walked off the court with a 56-52 victory. Although the entire team played inspired basketball, special recognition goes out to the team’s three all-stars of the tournament: Kendall Armstrong, Makayla Boisjoli and Laura Costello. This week the girls host McDougall on Wednesday at 6:00 and will play three games, at CHS, this weekend, as part of the Chestermere Invitational.
