VARSITY BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Lakers participated in 3A Provincial Championships in Camrose March 15-17. Heading into the tournament as the second seed, the Lakers spent the first day attending the opening ceremonies and banquet, practicing, and watching games. Friday morning saw the Lakers up against seventh seed St. Thomas out of Spruce Grove. The team jumped on the Thunder early and never relented, cruising to a 85-41 victory. All the Lakers contributed to a whole team victory.
The semifinal game saw the Lakers meet the host and number three seed Camrose Trojans. A tight first half saw the Lakers with a 37-35 lead in a hostile gym filled with Trojan supporters. A big run by the host saw the Lakers trailing by as many as 12 in the second half. Despite cutting the lead to 4 points with ball late in the fourth quarter the Lakers fell short in a tough 85-78 loss. Although deflated with the loss in the semi-final matchup the Lakers still had a bronze medal to play for against Edmonton Christian. The Lakers came out to a slow start in the first 25 minutes of the game and found themselves in a 15 point hole. Led by a tough defensive push the Lakers managed to take a 7 point lead with a little over two minutes remaining, but a strong shooting three point shooting performance by the Lions resulted in a heartbreaking 85-84 defeat. Despite a disappointing finish to an otherwise successful season the coaching staff could not be more proud of the young men the boys have become throughout the season. The five graduating seniors are going to be very successful in whatever they chose to do and will be great ambassadors for Chestermere High School. Special thanks to the coaches for all of your time, hard work and commitment.

VARSITY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL WINDUP
Last Wednesday, the Varsity Girls’ hade their team windup night. A great potluck dinner was shared by the team, parents and family members. Each player received their team picture and we had two special presentations to our two seniors. Richelle Rawlyk and Brittany Cavers were presented their practice gear, team warmup top and their senior plaque. Both of these young ladies played two seasons with the JV team and two years with the Varsity Lady Lakers. Both players have contributed a great deal to Lakers’ Basketball and we wish them both great success. Brittany will continue her studies at the University of Calgary. Richelle will be attending a number of College ID camps the next few weeks and looks to play college basketball next season. The team also had a gift for Wendy Rawlyk who did so much for the program the past four years. I thank the players and parents for the thoughtful gifts they gave to me. I appreciate them very much. This season was a good one for us and I enjoyed working with this team.
YASMENE SAGHIR SIGNS WITH MRU
Congratulations to Lady Laker 11th grader, Yasmene Saghir, who signed last week to play basketball for Mount Royal University in 2013-2014. This is a great opportunity for Yasmene who will receive an athletic scholarship to play for the Cougars. Teams do not normally sign a player this early but MRU was eager to commit to Yasmene. MRU Coach Joe Envoldson said about her, “We are very excited to have Yas’ commitment to MRU. She is an outstanding player and will make a major impact in the CIS. She is a player with huge potential and we look forward to having her part of our program.” Signing early takes the pressure off Yasmene and she can concentrate next year on her senior year. Yas had an outstanding season this year and looks forward to trying out for the Provincial Team this summer.
