On June 12, 2012 the Chestermere Chamber of Commerce hosted its first Brainy Breakfast at Lakeside Greens golf course. This was a time for businesses to network and learn from the City of Airdrie.
The guest speaker was Kent Rupert, the Economic Development Team Leader from the city of Airdrie. His presentation was titled “Opportunities and Challenges of Living Beside a Giant”. He spoke to the fact that it is challenging for local businesses to have the amenities of Calgary close, as residents can easily bypass their local businesses and do their shopping in Calgary. At the same time there is also an opportunity, as there are potentially 1.2 million customers on Chestermere’s doorstep. The challenge is to find ways to capture some of the Calgary market and at the same time encourage residents to use their local businesses.
Airdrie has an initiative called “Think Airdrie” which encourages residents to support their community and local businesses by looking for the products and services they need locally before shopping elsewhere.
