CHESTERMERE – For almost 60 years, Camp Chestermere has been a vital part of our community by providing a venue for recreational, spiritual and social interactions for kids. Camp Chestermere has hosted day camps, overnight camps, and school camps. Thousands of kids throughout the decades have benefited from Camp Chestermere’s presence in our community.
Last year the camp erected a beautiful multi-purpose facility to continue the good work for many decades into the future. On November 17th they celebrated the grand opening of their new facility with a dinner and program to celebrate the completion of the facility. The 150 or so people who attended the grand opening contributed roughly $10,000 towards the facility.
The new building is certainly a substantial upgrade from the former main building at the camp. The new facility provides Chestermere Scouts, Guides, Cadets and other groups with a building to use at no cost. In addition, even more “at risk kids” will be able to attend the camps and benefit from the programs the camp offers. The camp is open all year long. Putting on summer camps where the kids do activities like kayaking, power tubing, Tae Kwan Do and beach volleyball. Increasing in popularity are the winter weekend camps. I mustn’t forget to mention the campfires, creative arts, games and of course great food.
If you haven’t ever been to Camp Chestermere and you want to check out the facilities and programs, mark your calendars as the next “Open House” is a way into the new year; mark down June 9th, 2013 as the date for the Camp Chestermere “Community Block Party”. This is one day when the parents can see what the kids get to do at camp and can experience some of the activities themselves. Don’t miss it.
As the camp is operated all year round they depend on the following wonderful employees to keep things running smoothly – they are Ruth Styles – Chief Cook Extraordinaire, Shelley Johnson – Director of the Christian Leadership Training and Discipleship Program, Vicki Welsh – Year Round Guest Group Coordinator, Diane Ascott – Office Manager and Rick Bayer – Camp Director.
