CROSS COUNTRY
On Wednesday, Oct 3, in Canmore, our athletes braved 4 inches of snow, a temperature of -5 degrees Celsius and a w relenteless wind. The Lakers Cross Country team braved the elements and came out with some great results. All runners achieved a position of 35th or less, which is terrific considering in each age bracket there were at least 75 runners! Blake Smith achieved the highest position at 20th qualifying for Provincials. The runners did well, in the face of injury and unfavorable weather! Great season for the team, in a short season. Thanks to Coach Mogck for workking with the team.
VARSITY GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
On the Thanksgiving weekend the Senior Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team travelled to Kelowna to participate in the three tier, 40 school, UBC Kelowna tournament. The team was the only team outside of B.C. to participate. On Friday, in the seeding round, the Lady Lakers played three matches, winning the first two in three games and losing the last match in two. As a result they finished in second place in Tier 2 and stayed in that tier. On Saturday, the team played four matches, winning all four. They did not allow more than 17 points per game and in the final match only allowed 12 points a game. They won the Tier 2 championship. Aimee Wilson was awarded M.V.P. by the UBC Female Volleyball team referees. In league play on Wednesday, the Lady Lakers faced a strong Springbank team. They won the match in three straight games, in a hard fought battle. M.V.P. for the competition was Shantelle Jonassen.
To cap off the week, the Lady Lakers hosted Bowness High School for eight exhibition matches. They played three games in front of the school, winning all three. After the senior boys’ team played their three games, the team played five more games. They won four out of the five games. This Wednesday the team will host WG Murdoch in a 6:00 home matchup.
COWBOYS FOOTBALL
The Cowboys travelled to Airdrie, this past Friday, for a big game with the Bert Church Chargers. The team had a good week of practice and were confident heading into the game. Home field advantage was at stake. The Cowboys had a slow start and were down 14-0 at the half. Showing a resilient attitude the team came out strong in the second half. On the first platy for scrimmage Brad Taubert laid out a perfect deep ball to Brent Wileman who took it to the house for a 62 yard major. Wileman also made a great catch on the two point conversion. The Cowboys defense did not step up and allowed another Charger touchdown to go down 21-8. The team battled back with a couple of big Taubert runs. Taubert showed great patience on a 12 yard pass to slotback, Riley Lenci, who scored the major. On the two point conversion Jesse Seddon took a Taubert shovel pass in for the two pint conversion to make it 21-16. An outside kick was not successful and the Cowboys left disappointed. The team showed a lot of heart battling back. This week it appears that the Cowboys will travel to McDougall in a first round semi-final matchu. As of press time we do not know if we play on Friday or Saturday.
MIKE LUCYSHYN
After losing Myles Montpetit, in the Cochrane game due to injury, senior running back, Mike Lucyshyn, came into my room last Tuesday to let me know that he had torn his MCL in his knee and is also out for the season. Mike did not hurt in on the football field but in his back yard throwing a football around. Mike has had a stellar season this year and is tough to replace. Losing these two standouts has been tough on the Cowboys. Like Myles, Mike is a classy and dedicated young man. Both players never missed a practice last week.
JV BOYS VOLLEYBALL
The boys have been steadily improving this month! On Wednesday they won 3 straight games 25-8, 33-31 and 25-17 against Bow Valley High School. They have a bye this week but will be working hard to prepare for playoffs.
JV GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Last week we played another offensively talented squad in Springbank. The girls had a rough start losing the first 2 sets pretty quickly, due to tough serving and strong offence produced from the Phoenix. In the third match the girls pushed hard and came out with much more conviction and played a very tight game that ended 21-25. Even though we lost 3-0 in sets, the girls learned a lot about what to expect come Divisionals and will be pushing harder at practice to get prepared for all of our divisional rivals.
LADY LAKERS BOTTLE DRIVE
This Saturday, the Lady Lakers Basketball team will be canvassing the Chestermere area collecting bottles and cans. The team is raising funds for their Christmas trip to San Diego. Any help you can give to the team would be greatly appreciated.
JUNIOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK-JUSTINE BUI
Justine is a veteran member of the JV Girls volleyball squad. She is an extremely important part of the team. Her composure is unrivalled, her passing is always good, and her serve is always tough to handle. Justine always shows up to play and is a true competitor and leader as well as great great athlete.
Aimee has been a great addition to the Varsity Girls volleyball team. She has been instrumental in helping the team to their success this season. She is a force at the net with her blocking and spiking. Her skill and attitude helped her to be named Tournament MVP at the Kelowna Tournament last week.[/box] [box]SENIOR BOYS’ ATHLETE OF THE WEEK-BRENT WILEMAN
Brent is having a spectacular season so far this year, in his rookie season with the Cowboys. He has three touchdown receptions and three interceptions, despite limited playing time on defense. This past Friday he had three receptions and his 62 yard touchdown reception helped get the Cowboys back in the game.[/box]
