What a weekend for our Varsity Girl’s Volleyball team! They made history by being the first girls’ team from Chestermere to win a medal at the AAA Provincial Championships. In the early 90’s our girls won a silver and gold at the AA level, however this is our first medal at the AAA level.

VARSITY GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL WIN SILVER AT PROVINCIALS
Congratulations to the senior girls’ volleyball team for winning silver at the 3A Provincial Volleyball Championship in Camrose. The team was tough and determined, with a resilient attitude attitude and proved that they were #2 out of the 61 AAA teams in the province.

The team was part of the Blue Pool, considered the tougher of the two round robin tournament draws. In their first match they played Eagle Butte, losing the first game, but coming back in the second game. Down by 10 points Carleen Cymbal served 13 points in a row to lead them to the victory. In the third game they lost 15 -10. In their second match, they lost to Holy Trinity, last year’s provincial champions, in two games. This would prove to be the last match the Lady Lakers would lose until the final gold medal playoff. The team continued to get stronger as the provincial championship progressed, winning all the rest of the matches in their pool defeating Camrose, Beaverlodge and St. Paul, each in two games straight and finished 3rd in their pool.

In the quarter finals, the Lady Lakers faced Barrhead, defeating them in two games. In the semi -finals, it was a re-match with Holy Trinity, where they beat them in two games, playing outstanding volleyball. In the gold medal match the Lady Lakers faced Lacombe, winner of the Red Pool. They won the first game, lost the second game and were down 8 – 1 in the third game. They showed tremendous reslilience, heart and determination to battle back. The Lakers fought to a 14-14 tie, only to lose the last two points and the game 16-14. They showed courage and determination in this final game winning admiration and respect from the crowd and the officials, helping make this final game exciting and a nail biter until the very end. Both teams threw everything into this hard fought championship game and showed the best of high school sports.

Special congratulations go to Kayla Nixon for being selected to receive a sportsmanship pin. Additional thanks go to Jason Barber, the head coach of the senior girls’ volleyball team, who led the team to the South Central Zone Championship and the silver medal in the 3A Provincial Volleyball Championship. Thanks as well, to team supervisor and coach, Mr. Kim Greyson. Congratulations to all members of the team for an incredible tournament. You have made us very proud.

JV GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The 2012/2013 Junior Varsity Lady Lakers took to the court last weekend in the annual HTA Opening Knight Basketball Tournament. After two tough weeks of practice, the girls were anxious to play. Their opponent on Friday was the George McDougall Mustangs from Airdrie. The young Lady Lakers were nervous and although they fell behind early, they roared back with a strong second half and enthusiastically ran off the court with an exciting 45-42 victory. Saturday morning meant a date with the host HTA Knights. After another slow start, the girls showed resilience and once again battled from behind in the second half and cruised into the tournament final with a hard-fought 55-45 win. In the championship game. the Chestermere squad came up against a stronger and bigger F.P. Walshe team from Fort Macleod. The girls played hard and learned to play tough but, in the end, they had to settle for the silver medal as they fell 62-35 to the more experienced team. It was a great way to start the season and the girls can’t wait to hit the floor again and begin to prepare for their league opener in Springbank on December 4th. Congratulation to Coach Leong and his hard working group of athletes.

For the second straight week the only choice for our “Athlete” of the week is our Varsity Girls Volleyball team.
