VARSITY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL WIN BERT CHURCH TOURNAMENT
The Lady Lakers had another outstanding week running their undefeated streak to 8-0. The team has been recognized by the ASAA with a #3 ranking in “AAA” basketball rankings. Last Tuesday the girls withstood a strong start by the Mustangs of Airdrie and posted a victory. A strong second half was the difference in the game. On the weekend the girls won the Bert Church Invitational for the first time since 2001. Every player made a contribution in each game and this team continues to improve every game. In the opening round the team defeated Tommy Douglas, of Saskatoon, . On Friday, in the semi-finals the Lady Lakers beat Hunting Hills, of Red Deer . In the final the Lady Lakers’ press proved to be too much for the Falcons of Okotoks as the team earned a 61-31 victory and the tournament championship. Laura Costell was given the outstanding 6th man award with Yasmene Saghir named to the tournament all-star team. Senior, Aimee Wilson, was named the tournament MVP. On Tuesday, the team makes a return visit to Bert Church to take on the Chargers at 7:45. After that game the girls will be working hard to prepare for the holiday trip to Califiornia.

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
Another busy week for the Varsity boys began with a matchup against George McDougall in Airdire on Wednesday. A clash of styles saw the Lakers face a team with 3 players over 6’6″ against the Lakers uptempo style. In the end the Lakers ended up on top 87-85. Viny Jawanda hit two huge three pointers with under a minute to go to seal the victory. Yuvi Hundal led the way with 24 points while Drake Bruney dominated the boards. Heading into the Bert Church Invitational the Lakers first round opponent was W.R. Myers from Taber. With the first ASAA rankings posted on game day this was a matchup between #2 Taber and #5 Chestermere and did not disappoint. The game was close until the very end and with Taber having a 72-71 advantage they went on a 6-0 run to lead them to a 83-74 victory. Rebounding and turnovers proved to be the Lakers downfall down the stretch. Hundal led the way in scoring with 26 while Riley Lenci added 20 in the loss. The second game saw the Lakers take on William Aberhart. Sporting a 19 point lead at half time the Lakers held on for a 78-76 victory. The Lakers gave up 50 points in the second half while losing their scoring touch. . Hundal again had a great scoring game with over 20 points while Bruney was excellent again on the glass and finishing inside off of penetration. Charnjot Gill added 16 in the victory. The consolation final saw the Lakers take on Lord Beaverbrook. The Lakers dominted the Lords from the opening tip with the final score 81-45. It was a valuable game for the younger players to get some much needed game experience. Bailey Grabmuller had 10 points in the victory with Jherald Gonzales adding 12. Jawanda led the team with 16. Hundal was named a tournament all-star. The Lakers take on Bert Church next week at home to wrap up play going into the Christmas break.

JV BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Chestermere JV Lakers played their second game of their league season,  Wednesday, when they took on the George MacDougall iMustangs n Airdrie. The Lakers started out strong commanding an early lead that they held on to for an  81-53 victory. It was a hard fought win for the Lakers; the scoring was led by Jag Gill and Jeff Rodehustskors. The Lakers also played in the Jr. Rams Classic hosted by Central Memorial High in Calgary. The Lakers played a total of 3 games winning one and losing 2 games. Jag Gill, Jeff Rodehutskors, and Mitch Marjoram all were named game MVP’s. Also a congratulations to Jeff Rodehutskors for being named a tournament All Star.  As the weekend went on the Lakers seemed to get their game together.  Next up for the Lakers is a home date with the Bert Church Chargers on December 19th.

JV GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Junior Varsity girls’ basketball team had their home-opener last Tuesday against the always tough George McDougall Mustangs. It was a defensive battle, from the opening jump ball, between two evenly-matched teams. The Lady Lakers used an up-tempo game to take a slim 4 point lead at half time. The Mustangs came out tough after the break and the two rivals battled hard with the lead changing numerous  times in the second half. The Chestermere squad dug deep in the fourth quarter and hung on for a 49-43 victory. The Lady Lakers had outstanding performances from the entire team, with Megan Stride, Taylor Sortland, and Kayla Georgsen leading the way offensively.
The girls look forward this week to league games against Bert Church and Beiseker, as they close out their pre-holiday break schedule.

KAYLA GEORGSEN
My apologies to Kayla Georgsen. We submitted the wrong picture last week. Here is the proper picture. Kayla is having a tremendous season with the JV Lady Lakers. She is a talented point guard with college potential. She is the only grade 9 player to join the Senior Lady Lakers on their California trip.

VARSITY GIRLS’ ATHLETE OF THE WEEK-AIMEE WILSON
Senior, Aimee Wilson, has had an outstanding start to the season. She has been instrumental in the success of the team, so far. A talented offensive player, she has outstanding skills. A student of the game, few players can match her basketball IQ. Aimee is currently being recruited by three CIS schools in Alberta and has a goal of making the Canadian National Team. As well, she had an outstanding volleyball season helping the Lakers to a zone championship and a silver at Provincials.

VARSITY BOYS’ ATHLETE OF THE WEEK -YUVI HUNDAL
Yuvi led the Lakers to a 3-1 record last week including a big Rockyview win over George McDougall. Yuvi also earned a tournament All-Star award in the BCI. Hundal has consistently led the Lakers in scoring, eclipsing the 20 point mark in all but 3 games so far this season. This is looking to be a great start to his senior season for the four year Laker.
