We had a great week. Our basketball teams all won their league games and we were well-represented at the League Volleyball Awards Banquet.

We are working on updating our athletics’ web-site this week. This week we will add some of the basic information and by January will have it completely updated. Thanks to Coach Schaller for taking on this project.
ROCKY VIEW VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE AWARDS BANQUET
64 of our volleyball players, coaches and parents attended the Rocky View League Volleyball Banquet on Monday, at George Mc Dougall High School.
Our teams took home a number of awards:
All-Stars: Kyla Sendecki, Bryce Dunaway, Aimee Wilson, Rylea Walker and Craig Douthwright.
Heart Award:Ashley Gunn, Mitchell Marjoram, Shantelle Jonassen, and Trysen Turner.
Congratulations on your achievements. We are proud of you.
KAYLA NIXON NAMED LEAGUE MVP
For the second consecutive time Kayla Nixon was named MVP for the Varsity Girls’ League. Kayla has had an outstanding high school career and was instrumental in her team’s success. Congratulations and best of luck to this talented senior.
VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
The senior boys had a busy week of games. Wednesday was the home opener against Springbank. The team came out strong and jumped to an early lead. The Lakers finished with a 88-56 victory thanks to their uptempo style and pressure defense. Riley Lenci led the Lakers with 21 points, following by Yuvi Hundal with 18. On Thursday the Lakers opened up their home tournament with a matchup against rival Cochrane. The Lakers struggled on both ends of the floor, leading to a 68-59 loss. Friday the Lakers played in front of the school against Canmore and built a 15 point lead midway through the third quarter; struggles on the offensive end saw the Lakers win a tight 61-58 game. Drake Bruney was key in the win, hitting two big free throws at the end of the game and dominating the boards on both ends of the floor. The final game of the tournament saw the Lakers matched up against Catholic Central out of Lethbridge. Offensive struggles again saw the Lakers fall 62-55. Charnjot Gill led the way finding several players for easy shots and layups and knocking down several three point shots. Jherald Gonzales is to be commended for his work on the offensive boards, playing his best game of the season so far. The Lakers have a busy week again travelling to George McDougall on Wednesday and participating in the Bert Church Invitational Thursday through Saturday.
JV BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The JV Boys’ defeated Sprinbank Phoenix in their home opener. The Lakers started out strong commanding an early lead that they held on to secure a 70-54 victory. It was a hard fought win for the Lakers; the scoring was led by Bryce Dunaway’s 26 points. The Lakers also hosted their annual Tournament over the weekend playing four games and finishing with a 2-2 record. Ali Abdulghani, Jag Gill and Bryce Dunaway were named tournament all stars. Next up for the Lakers is a road date with the George MacDougal Mustangs on Tuesday, December 12th at 6:00.
VARSITY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Lady Lakers extended their record to 4-0, with a 61-33 victory over the Springbank Phoenix last Tuesday. The girls were very strong defensively and used their full court pressure to create numerous turnovers. Offensively the team was strong, but did not always finish. The team was led by Aimee Wilson with 22 points and 13 rebounds and Yasmene Saghir with 23 points and 14 rebounds. This week the Lady Lakers host McDougall, in the home league opener, Tuesday at 7:45. On the weekend the team travels to Airdrie to play in the Bert Church Invitational.
JV GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
It was another very successful week for the JV Girls basketball team .It began with a visit to Springbank on Tuesday for the league opener. The Lady Lakers put pressure on the home squad from the opening tip off and, with an up-tempo offense, took an early lead that they would never relinquish. The entire team played well and came away with an impressive 54-26 victory. On Friday it was off to Olds and the Spartan Classic. First game was against the Lakers from Sylvan Lake. Despite a slow start, the team found its legs early in the second half and began to dominate in all facets on the game. Led by captain Natalie Russell and the strong play of Kayla Georgsen, the Lady Lakers ran off the court with a convincing 55-21 win. Saturday meant a match up with Archbishop Oscar Romero. This time the girls had a great start to the game and built up what turned out to be an insurmountable half-time lead, 31-9. Every player contributed and the team was able to withstand a strong challenge from in the second half and it was off to the championship game after a 45-33 victory. The girls took to the court in the final against a very strong Lindsay Thurber team. The Lady Lakers started well and competed tenaciously early in the game and went into the half-time break down by 5 points. The long, tough weekend of basketball caught up with the team and the Raiders from Red Deer showed their experience and physical talent and captured the title with a hard-fought 25 point win. Overall, it was a another great week of learning for the Lady Lakers and they look forward to their home-opener on Tuesday December 11 at 6:00 againts the Mc Dougall Mustangs.

JV GIRLS’ ATHLETE OF THE WEEK-KAYLA GEORGSEN
Kayla Georgsen, starting point guard for the JV Lady Lakers, had an impressive week leading her team to their first league win vs Springbank and a 2nd place finish at the Olds Spartans Classic. Poised beyond her years, she was a dominant player scoring 36 points over the four games and led the team in assists. Her intensity on defense makes her an all-around player and she will continue to impress on the hardcourt for years to come.[/box]

JV BOYS’ ATHLETE OF THE WEEK -ALI ABDULGHANI
Ali started his JV year off strong and fast, leading the team to a 3-2 record over their first week of play. He was also named an all-star at the Chestermere Invitational Tournament, this past weekend. Ali leads the team in assists, steals and minutes per game this year. Ali’s strong determination, hard work and smart play will be a key factor in the teams future success.[/box]
