VARSITY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL WINS SAIT TOURNAMENT
Congratulations to the Varsity Girls’ basketball team for starting their season with a tournament victory at the SAIT Tournament. In the opening game the Lady Lakers defeated 4A Ross Shep, from Edmonton, 56-27. In the semis the girls had a tough time with Bishop Carroll, fighting back from a nine point deficit, to earn a 53-48 victory and a spot in the finals. In the championship the Lady Lakers were matched up with league rival, George Mc Dougall. The team was focused and had a great start, never looking back. In the third quarter the team was up 35 and settled for a 60-37 win. All team members contributed to the win. Congratulations to Rachel Cooke, Yasmene Saghir and Aimee Wilson on their Player of the Game awards. This week the girls open their league season with a road game in Springbank against the Phoenix. Game time is 7:45

JV GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Junior Varsity Lady Lakers had a busy week of practice as they prepare for their league opener at Springbank on December 4th. The girls worked hard in the gym early in the week and on Thursday, November 29th, the Lady Lakers took the opportunity to do a little off-court bonding. It began with a quick ride to Boston Pizza for a team meal and then it was over to the SAIT Campus Center to watch the Varsity Girls play in their first game of the year. It was a great night and the girls look forward to more team-building events later on in the season.  The girls finish out their pre-Christmas tournament schedule this weekend in Olds. Their first opponent will be HJ Cody from Sylvan Lake on Friday night. Best of luck girls.

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
The Varsity Boys team travelled to High River to compete in the Highwood High Tournament. The three games were the first competition for the Lakers this season. Opening the tournament against McCoy, out of Medicine Hat, the Lakers emerged with an 88-52 victory. The Lakers up tempo style and pressure defense pushed them to victory. The team was led by Drake Bruney’s 21 points and 15 rebounds, as well by Grade 10 newcomer Tyis Yellowhorn’s 11 points. The semi-final was a tight match against Canmore Collegiate. The Lakers ended up on the losing end of a 74-70 score, thanks to a low shooting performance and key buckets from Canmore down the stretch. The Lakers were led by senior guard Yuvraj Hundal with 21 points. Yellowhorn added 14 and Charnjot Gill had 12 points in the loss. In the third place game the Lakers found themselves in another tight affair against a well coached and hard working Crescent Heights team out of Medicine Hat. The Lakers held on for a 70-68 victory led by Hundal’s huge 28 point performance. The weekend laid a good foundation for the young Lakers team to build on heading into league play and their home tournament this week. Riley Lenci was a key leader throughout the weekend, playing solid throughout.

JV BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The JV Boys’ were idle this past week but working hard to prepare for their league opener this Wednesday as they host the Springbank Phoenix. Game time is 6:00. The team also looks forward to hosting the Chestermere Invitational this weekend, where they will get four games. GO LAKERS!!

DRAKE BRUNEY

Drake led the Varsity Boys in rebounding with over 10 rebounds a game while competing in the Highwood Tournament, while adding 21 points in the opening game. His athleticism and tenacity on the glass gives the Lakers many extra possessions and starts the break in transition off defensive rebounds.
