CHESTERMERE – The formality of a sod turning signifies the start of a new building but on November 16th, the ground was so frozen all that could be disturbed was a mound of snow to symbolize the event. The Kindergarten to Grade 9 School will be built in the Kinniburgh district on Chestermere’s eastside is expected to open for the 2014-15 school year. The school has the capacity for 900 students.
Dr. Bruce Pettigrew, Trustee for Ward 6 and Chair of the Board of Trustees for Rock View School District, introduced the other dignitaries including Bev LaPeare, Trustee for Ward 2. LaPeare represents the schools in Chestermere, Langdon, and Indus areas. Mayor Patricia Matthews, MLA Rick Fraser, representing the Minister of Education Jeff Johnson and Bruce McAllister, MLA for Chestermere-Rocky View also attended. McAllister is the Education Critic for the Wildrose Party.
Most of the other Rocky View School Trustees, as well as the local Chestermere School Principals and some parents braved the chilly weather and were pleased there were no lengthy speeches for the sod turning.
The same day there were 2 other schools in Airdrie that had a sod turning ceremony which required several of the representatives to participate at those locations as well.
