CHESTERMERE – With the snow melting and the sun sticking around longer each day, local football enthusiasts are starting to think about the upcoming Chiefs season.
However, each year, both the Atom and PeeWee teams usually squeak by with just enough players for a full, committed roster. So, with the hopes of finding more interested players, the coaches are getting the word out early about the upcoming season.
“After a very successful 2011 campaign, the Chestermere Chiefs Football Program is looking to grow and offer greater opportunities to the children of Chestermere and area,” said coach Kelsey Johnson. “The Atom Chiefs went 6 – 2 in 2011, and the PeeWee Chiefs went 5 – 3 in the extremely competitive Calgary Pee Wee Football league.
“Both clubs have a strong nucleus of returning players who are looking for some more players to add to the mix in order to make the teams even stronger.”
Boys and girls can play at all levels, and there are positions for kids of any size. All equipment is supplied by the Chiefs organization, with the players providing their shoes only.
PeeWee costs $350.00 for the season, with Atomc costing $300.00. This covers a minimum of 80 hours on the field, for both practice and game time.
“Football is the ultimate team game. All players must move in unison for success, one player cannot dominate a game,” Johnson said. “Chiefs players are taught the proper techniques that allow them to participate safely in tackle football.
“We have a great mix of coaches, from former professional and university players, high school coaches and other former players with specific expertise in the skill areas of tackle football.”
This year’s season will run from August 1 to November 15. All practices are held at the Chestermere Rec Center, and all games at Shouldice Park in Calgary.
There will be an information session on Thursday, March 22 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Chestermere Rec Center, upstairs next to Edge Fitness. Players can come in a try a few drills and meet the coaches.
