Semester 1 exams are done and the basketball teams and curling teams will be back in high gear preparing for a busy February.
CURLING
The curling team has been hard at work the past two months preparing for their upcoming Rocky View Championship. This week the team will conduct their qualifying bonspiel on Tuesday and Saturday. Next week they will participate in the league championship, with a goal of qualifying teams for the South Central Zone Championship. The team has 40 participants, the highest number in recent memory
COWBOYS’ FOOTBALL AWARDS NIGHT
On January 16 the Cowboys hosted their annual team awards banquet. About 75 people braved the frigid weather and enjoyed an excellent potluck dinner. Presentations were made to the 5 seniors and a pictures were presented to all team members. Major awards were given as follows: MVP (Brad Taubert), Most Inspirational (Kellyn Huot), Best Teammate (Fletcher Freund), Outstanding Offensive Player (Hunter Karl), Outstanding Defensive Player (Jesse Seddon), Outstanding Lineman (Tristan McMurdo), Outstanding Special Teams (Justin Aldoff), Coaches Hustle Award (Andy Potter/ Deron Thompson), Rookie of the Year (Trevor Costello) and Most Improved (Clayton Baxter). Gifts were also presented to the managers, coaches and to Mrs. Mc Murdo who has done so much for the team the past four years.
ALEX COOK AND JASDEEP GILL OFF TO THE U of C DINOS
Congratulations to two of our seniors who will attend the University of Calgary next year on athletic scholarships. Alex Cook, signed with the Dinos prior to Christmas. Alex had an outstanding four year career at CHS and helped the Lakers to their best season ever. Alex helped his team to a league and zone championship and earned the Rocky View MVP award. Jasdeep Gill signed with the basketball Dinos this past weekend. Jasdeep is also in his fourth year with the Lakers and has helped his team to great success. The Lakers are currently ranked #1 in 3A Basketball in the province. Jasdeep is a provincial team member and last year earned a National Team tryout. Congratulations to both of you. Chestermere is very proud of you and wish you the best of luck.
VARSITY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
This past weekend the Lady Lakers participated in a mini-tournament in Okotoks. On Friday the team did not have a good outing losing to host, FCHS, but came back on Saturday with a better effort against Rundle. With a depleted squad, due to injuries, the Lakers fought back, late in the game, to earn a 65-63 victory. All team members played an important role in the victory. This week the team travels to Cochrane for a big league game on Wednesday and on the weekend will travel to Airdrie to compete in the McDougall Tournament. The following weekend the Lady Lakers will host their annual Invitational Tournament.
JV GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The JV Girls’ will travel to Cochrane on Wednesday, for a league game, and attempt to keep their undefeated record intact. On the weekend the team will travel south to Claresholm to compete in an Invitational Tournament.
VARSITY BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Varsity Boys have a first place matchup, on Tuesday, as they host the Cochrane Cobras. Not only is it a Rocky View first place game but pits the #1 and #2 3A teams, in the province, against each other. Many are predicting this as Provincial Championship Final in March. On the weekend the Lakers travel to Medicine Hat to participate in a tournament.
JV BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The JV Boys will also host Cochrane on Tuesday, with game time at 6:00. This weekend the team will participate in the Central Memorial Tournament in Calgary
This week’s Athlete of the Week is Lady Laker, Richelle Rawlyk. Richelle is having an excellent season. A senior, she helped the team to win the championhip at the Bearspaw Christian Tournament. This past weekend she had an outstanding gameagainst Rundle with 17 points and 5 assists. With 8 seconds left in the game she drove to the basket and scored the winning basket in a 65-63 victory.[/box]
