CHESTERMERE – About 55 energetic young girls from Strathmore, Langdon and Chestermere showed up at the Chestermere Regional Community Association (CRCA) on Saturday, November 17th for the Annual Go Girl event. For a token $10 the girls were exposed to a powerful day of activities and information that some of the girls rarely get a chance to participate in. Each of the young ladies received a Go Girl T-shirt, a healthy lunch, door prizes and a full day of socializing with friends and making some new acquaintances. Many parents also saw that this as an opportunity to get some early Christmas shopping started without prying eyes.
The Go Girl program was designed to support less active teen girls, ages 11 – 17, to pursue an active living lifestyle. The morning sessions started out with some Axe Capoeira Dance, running instruction, self-defence and Yoga.
The noon hour break gave the girls some time to go about and visit the many booths set up for the youth to get information from the RCMP, YWCA, Alberta Health Services, Chestermere Lifepath Wellness and the Strathmore/Airdrie Teen Clinic.
The afternoon programs accelerated on full speed with a high energy group Zumba Dance led by Frienty Ko. The lively music drew the crowd from the other areas in the Rec. Centre to see what was going on in the gym.
The girls then separated into manageable groups where they attended badminton fundamentals, Hip Hop Dance instruction and Laughter Wellness.
As the day wound down the girls settled in for a session on meditation and then received their door prizes.
The CRCA would like to send out a Special Thanks to the many sponsors for donating money, prizes and food; these include the Chestermere CIBC Bank, InMotion Network, The Chestermere General Store Lifepath Wellness and Boston Pizza. Some others that need to be thanked for their contributions are the Alberta Children’s Hospital, Connect Family & Sexual Abuse Network, Laughter Wellness – Sharon Falconer, YELL (Youth Encouraging Lasting Leadership), Herbal Magic Calgary Eating Disorders Program, Chestermere Mental Health Services, YogArt – Chantalle Stott, Women’s Health Resources – Calgary, Aspen Family and Community Network Society, Chestermere RCMP, YWCA, Chestermere Lifepath Wellness and the Strathmore/Airdrie Teen Clinic.
Many of the girls come every year to the Go Girl event as it is just a fun and informative day! See you next year.
