We are grade 5 students from Prairie Waters. Our class joined an Energy Diet Challenge on February 6th. In the challenge we are trying to reduce our energy usage and garbage. We are competing against 400 other classes in Canada. As the classes complete challenges (such as using no electricity for a day) we get points.
Some of the challenges we have completed are:
- Drew’s one hour no power.
This challenge is about not using electricity for an hour. Our class did it for a whole day. From this challenge we learned that if you lived in a third world country it is hard to live without electricity. LUTW (Light Up The World) is an organization that goes to third world countries and put energy efficient light bulbs in their houses. - Sign up or sign out.
For this challenge you have to get your friends and family to sign a pledge. When you sign the pledge you have to try to reduce your transportation, home energy use and water consumption. If you get over 140 signatures you get 14 points. - How big is your carbon footprint.
In this challenge you had to see how much our carbon footprint is. If you drive to school it is 4 points. If you walk to school it is 0 points. You don’t want to have points. Our class’s footprint was 67.4 kilograms of co2 per day just from how we get to school. Then we had to write on footprints how much our footprint was in the morning and in the afternoon.
As a class we have learned a lot about energy consumption and how we really need to reduce our energy consumption. We have signed a pledge to reduce our energy consumption. Our class would like to have the rest of Chestermere to sign our pledge too. Here is the link to the pledge. Please sign our pledge to help us win.
