Remembrance Day Ceremony in Chestermere

CHESTERMERE – There was standing room only at the Remembrance Day Ceremony held at the Chestermere Recreation Centre on Sunday November 11th. The ceremony had been planned to be an outside event but with the chilly weather the affair was moved into the Rec. Centres’ main gym. The Chestermere High School Band performed O’Canada and God Save the Queen which was sung by Sarah Moore and “Last Post” was performed by bugler Melody Gregory.
The Honour Guard marched down the aisle and set up the flags at the front of the room where there were 4 Cadets with heads bowed. After a short address from emcees, Anette McKenzie and Councillor Heather Davies, John Wright Lt. (N) Retired and Mayor Matthews, the poem “In Flanders Fields” was recited by Anton Bondarenko and then several wreaths were individually brought to the front of the room and placed by members of the RCMP, the Canadian Military, The Town of Chestermere, Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts, Girls Guides and several others.
Following the ceremony there was a Toonie Lunch with donations going towards the Chestermere Remembrance Cenotaph. Everyone coming to the ceremony was encouraged to donate non-perishable items to the Veterans Food Bank.
Co-chairs of the Chestermere Remembrance Cenotaph Committee Shawn and Anette McKenzie would like to thank the other committee members: Ray Hessler, Marilyn Conrad, Donna Timmermans, Carolynne Hinde, Staff Sgt. Glenn Henry and John Wright Lt.(N) Ret’d.
