St. Gabriel High School Sports – cross country season over for this year

Cross Country
The high school cross country season is officially over at St. Gabriel the Archangel, and once again there is much to be proud of. For the second straight season, the Guardians had representation at the provincial level. Jordan Maisonneuve, who recorded top 10 finishes all season long, qualified for the provincial championships, held in Red Deer. Against the best 129 runners the province had to offer, Maisonneuve finished 17th; besting his 30th place finish at last year’s provincials. A great accomplishment to end a great season. Congratulations to all the coaches and runners, and we already look forward to seeing what’s in store next year.

Not without a fight.
The senior varsity girls’ soccer team ended their season last week, losing their quarter-final playoff match to Crescent Heights. The girls entered the playoffs having lost only once this season. Unfortunately for them, that loss came against the very team they had to face. Still, the girls were confident heading into the match that things would be different this time.
It didn’t start well, as they
quickly fell behind 1-0. The girls bounced right back, though, scoring the next two. Kevyn Timmons scored the first off a free kick, curling the ball beautifully into the top corner of the goal. The second goal came off a scramble in front of the net. Jordyn Richter redirected a ball that came in from a corner kick. The ball hit several players before ending up in the back of the net. The girls took a 2-1 lead into the second half, but with co-
Captain, Julie Grivel, leaving the game with an injury, they knew they were in for a long finish.
The Cowboys capitalized on a tired Guardians team, tying the game and then taking the lead late in the match. The girls were not going to give up, however, sending wave after wave of attacks at the opposition goal. It was a frantic finish, but sadly, luck would not be on their side, and the season came to an end.
