St Gabriel Makes It To “We Day” 2012

This year, 24 lucky students from St. Gabriel got the once in a lifetime opportunity to go to We Day Alberta at the Saddledome, along with 18 000 other kids . It was truly a life changing experience. The students received the chance to listen to many amazing speakers, all with very different stories that many of the student could relate to. The students, including myself, were all very grateful that we were one of the many schools chosen to go to We Day.
We Day was such an inspirational day. The team that put the show together did such a great job and taught the audience many important lessons like, how to help out people in need, how to be more selfless, and how to appreciate what we have. Many of the speakers started out with nothing. For example, Liz Murray graduated high school with honors while being homeless at the time. For all her hard work, she received scholarships and went on to study at Harvard University. With a little positive thinking, support from people around her, and inspiration from others, Liz went from being out on the streets to being a Harvard grad. It goes to show how much a few positive words and some helpful people can drastically change an individual’s life.
We Day has also created the largest penny drive in Canadian history with a little help from RBC banks! The penny drive is called We Create Change. Free the Children has created this penny drive to support clean water projects in their Adopt a Village communities around the world. The bags have to be filled with $25.00 in pennies. Every bag you fill provides clean water to one person for life.  The SGA We Day team will be using the month of February 2013 to bring awareness to youth change and make positive impacts in the school, community, and world.  All people are encouraged to check out  www.freethechildren.comto learn more about these life-changing initiatives.
We Day Alberta was an awesome day, and St. Gabriel was very excited they got to share the experience with all of the other schools at the presentation.
