St. Gabriel sports – Back On Track!

Volleyball season is underway and it has been a great start for the teams at SGA. The Junior Varsity Boys team won their opening match of the season 3-1 over Crescent Heights. Nick Zeiler was an absolute menace at the net, while Kyle Hoeschen and Josh Martin’s steady play proved essential in thwarting any rally. Ali Fedda, the team’s setter, has become a vocal leader on the team and brings great energy to the squad. The Senior Varsity boys got their preseason underway, winning their last 3 matches. Their season begins this week.
In other news, both Junior High teams won their matches against St. Martha, while the Junior Varsity Girls dropped their first match to Crescent Heights.
Now that’s more like it!
After struggling to a draw in their first game of the season last week, the SGA Senior Varsity Girls soccer team got back to what it does best: winning. They started the week with a very convincing 5-0 win over Queen Elizabeth High School. The defence, lead by Mikayla Luettecke, looked much more organized than the previous game, and Jessica Mosca recorded her first shut- out of the season. Julie Grivel, who is the team’s most versatile player, slotted in a right back and completely shut down Queen E’s top player. Meanwhile, the midfield showcased their superior possession and passing game. Rachel Patzer and Jordyn Richter solidified the middle, while Kaylee Olmedo and Mikayla Semeniuk used their speed
down the flanks. Kevyn Timmons kept up her torrid scoring pace, netting her second hat trick of the season, while Shelby Hayes and Richter added their first markers of the season.
The girls then went on to a dominating performance against James Fowler, winning the match 8-0, despite only having 9 girls available. Goal scorers in that match were Timmons (4), Hayes (2), Richter, Semeniuk, and Mosca.

Girls Volleyball: All They Do Is Win

Most of the girls on the SGA Senior Varsity Girls Volleyball team have been playing together for a number of years now. Over that time they have brought two banners to the school. One might say they have become accustomed to success. Now, they are about to face their toughest challenge. This year they find themselves playing at the senior high school level for the first time, and the competition will be greater than ever before. The girls put the league on notice that they are up for the challenge, however, during the preseason tip-off tournament. While their nerves may have gotten the best of them early, causing them to lose their first match, it was business as usual once they got their feet wet. They won their last three matches, taking 6 out of 7 sets. Can they bring another banner to St. Gabriel the Archangel? The regular season starts this week.
