CHESTERMERE – Two 14-year-old Chestermere Lake Middle School students traveled to Edmonton this past month to compete at the Alberta Age Group Trials.
The trials were held from February 24 to 27, and featured 13 and 14-year-old athletes in a number of different events.
Stephanie Churcher, who swims at the Nose Creek Swim Association, and Shelby Taubert of the Calgary Patriots, were the two local competitive swimmers who attended the event.
Churcher and Taubert brought home a total of five medals between the two of them, dominating their respective events. With their success and gold medal performances, both swimmers have punched their tickets to the Alberta Age Group Championships.
Taubert won gold in the 800 freestyle with a time of 10:32.48, with Churcher winning two gold medals, one in the 1500 freestyle with a time of 20:35.76, as well as one in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:59.86.
Churcher also received a silver medal in the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:55.55, and a bronze in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:25.30.
The girls hope to bring home more medals when they compete again this weekend against the fastest 13 and 14-year-old swimmers in the province. They will be swimming at the Talisman Centre from March 9 to 11.
