Chestermere High getting ready for break

Chestermere High has been buzzing with events the past two weeks. Classes have been busy getting ready for the upcoming Christmas Break, because our exams begin soon after. From tickets sales to fashion shows, the students have shown their dedication to events occurring in and around the school in an effort to demonstrate school pride and spirit.
First block classes have been busy getting supplies for Stephen’s Backpacks. Every class was given a backpack to fill and a card where they could choose the child’s gender and age. Once a class fills one backpack, they have the opportunity to keep filling other backpacks. The deadline to bring things in is December 10th and we are already doing an amazing job supporting this wonderful organization.
The Winter Formal Committee has been extremely busy with ticket sales and determining decorations for the Grade 12’s special night on December 12th. With the theme being “Great Gatsby”, the Winter Formal Committee believes it is only fair to try and find as many decorations that give justice to the theme as possible. It is a huge responsibility as it is student planned. Everything from the ticket designs, DJ choice, and decorations were completely decided by the committee that meets Monday’s during the lunch hour. Ticket sales began on Monday during the lunch hour, and end on Friday the 29th. The Winter Formal Committee is incredibly excited to share this night they have planned with their peers and they are sure that it will be a wonderful night spent with even more wonderful people.
To promote the theme day “Retro Day” on Friday, Student Government held a fashion show on Wednesday in the North Social area where mostly the 11’s and 12’s eat lunch. A handful of Student Government members as well as two teachers walked from end to end of the area showing off different retro decades. Some included the 70’s, 80’s, a Twiggy inspired Mod style, early 90’s, and a 90’s grunge outfit. While each decade walked, a song that matched their decade was played over speakers that were set up. It was emceed by Grade 12 student Breanne Magnusson, who had a short write up for each to fully explain the era that was represented. The kids absolutely loved it and it made them excited to dress up.
The Music Department has also been extremely occupied preparing with numerous events. Just recently, the Jazz Band and Jazz Combo “The Jazz Butchers” had the opportunity to perform for the Whitecappers on Tuesday evening. They were a fantastic crowd to play for and gave the band a standing ovation. This is extremely rewarding for a musician as it solidifies the performance and lets the musicians who performed know that they played a fantastic show for their audience. The Music Department is having their Christmas Concert at the Knox United Church on December 10th. It will be a perfect venue filled with a range of Christmas tunes that the students work on daily. The Chestermere High Drumline also has an exciting performance that they are very lucky to be part of Saturday the 30th and December 1st. Cenovus Energy Inc. has asked the Drumline to be part of their Christmas party that will be held at the Telus Convention Centre. It is an amazing opportunity for the Chestermere High Drumline and we will be performing our own choreography while playing alongside dancers, trapeze artists, and many more incredible entertainers. It is a once in a lifetime experience and we are incredibly lucky to take part in this opportunity. The two main songs that we will be performing is an arrangement of “Bang Bang” by Will.I.Am and “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody” by Fergie. They will also be performing several Christmas Carols. These are high-energy pieces that will be performed by many high level performers and we cannot wait to since we have put an insane amount of rehearsal hours into it.
Once again, Chestermere High does not fail to keep its students busy. Being so close to Christmas I can only imagine that we are in for some more craziness before we begin our winter break.
