Chestermere High News

We are now several weeks into the 2013-2014 year, and the students and staff of Chestermere High are busier than ever! For example, the Winter Formal Committee is in full planning mode for the “Great Gatsby” themed grade 12 dance which will be held on December 12. However, since Halloween is right around the corner, that’s the focus and the Student Government has been building the hype. All students and staff are encouraged to dress up on the 31st to make this Halloween the most decorative one yet. There will be treats for those who dress up and prizes for the top three costumes. Homeroom teams from each grade will also take part in the first-ever pumpkin carving contest, hosted by Stepping Stones. Each group will be assigned an emotion and will carve on the 30th. Winners will be determined on the 31st.

Chestermere High’s band, lead by Mr. Johnston, sounds amazing. The school’s first concert of the year was held on the 24th at Chestermere High School, and the theme was the ‘British Invasion’. Songs included those from The Kinks, Rolling Stones, and the Beatles. Different wings of the bands were featured, as well as individual students. The students had a surprise number for Mr. Johnston, “To Sir, with Love.”

On Friday, October 18, we had our monthly assembly with very special guests. The Live Different group (who has presented to our school for the third straight year) talked and laughed with our students. They were joined by musical guests, Half-Chance Heroes. After rocking to the band’s performance, and skits full of laughs, Live Different members shared a bit of their personal struggles in life, such as battling depression, drug problems, and the hardships of growing up. They then talked about how they dealt with their problems and that they realized the urge to help people was embodied in them. The organization now hosts an opportunity called ‘Hero’s Holiday’ where students from all across Canada travel to a village in another country and help build houses and schools for people in need. Many thanks to both Live Different and Half Chance Heroes!
Once Halloween is over, the Student Government of Chestermere High will focus on the fundraising events leading into the holiday season. As mentioned in the last article, these include “Room-in-a-box,” (High River flood relief through the Salvation Army) and Stephen’s Backpacks. Both organizations will present at our next assembly on November 7 to share their needs and successes with the student body.
Such a busy year and it has only just started. Stay tuned for all the exciting events and activities happening at our school in the months to come.
