Chestermere High School Athletics weekly wrap

CURLING
From Coach Sutcliffe: “We can be very proud of our curling athletes and their representation of our school at the South Central Zones Bonspiel. Congratulations to: Clayton Baxter, Dallas Brocklesby, Kaden Clouston, Kevin Wolff, Jessica Frebrowski, Judy Tran, Aleisha Hall, and Leane Haasen. The girls played hard and strong in the round robin. They put so much effort into their two games on the first day, they could hardly move to play their third game. They played smart games and fought hard right up to the last rock in an extra end. As Jessica said, “The other skip had to make the shot of her life to beat us and she did!” They finished with a record of 1 win and 2 loses. Each loss was by one point in the the final end, one of them being in extra ends. The boys finished the round robin with 2 wins & 1 loss, advancing to the medal round. The second day was a difficult day on the rink. They seemed to have to play “catch-up” all day. They would tie, or go ahead and then fall behind again. We placed just out of the medals. They can be proud of their performance.” Thanks to Coach Sutcliffe and her coaches for another excellent season.
30th ANNUAL LADY LAKERS INVITATIONAL
Thanks to all of our student and parent volunteers who helped make our tournament a success. It was an excellent weekend of basketball for both teams.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Junior Varsity Lady Lakers basketball had a busy schedule on the hardcourt this last week. On Tuesday the girls travelled to Airdrie to take on the always-tough George McDougall Mustangs. It was a defensive struugle in the first half as both teams showed their rustiness, coming off a two week layoff. The two squads exchanged the lead six times in the second half before the girls from Chestermere pulled away with less than two minutes left in the game and walked off with a thrilling 47-43 victory.
On the weekend the team had the honour of sharing the spotlight with the Varsity team as both teams played in the 30th annual Lady Laker Invitational. The girls tipped things off on Thursday night against Bishop Carroll  from Calgary. In a tightly-contested affair, the Cardinals played tenacious defense late in the game and held on to defeat the Lady Lakers 57-52.
On Friday morning the team had the chance to play in front of the student body. The awe-struck girls took a while to get going but fought hard and learned to play in a boisterous gym and learned many lessons despite losing a close game 53-48. The girls closed out the weekend with a match against the very-tough St. Albert Skyhawks from Edmonton. The team battled hard but ran out of gas late in the fourth quarter and dropped a 52-40 decision to a very good basketball team.
The Lady Lakers had some outstanding performances on the weekend led by tournament all-star Kayla Georgeson and players- of- the- game winners Natalie Russell and Taylor Sortland. The girls have another busy week coming up with a game in Beiseker on Tuesday and then travelling to Canmore on the weekend.

JV BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Chestermere JV Lakers played their sixth league game  on Wednesday when they took on the George MacDougall Mustangs  at home. The Lakers started out strong getting an early jump on the Mustangs and holding on to for a 61-53 win. It was a hard fought win for the Lakers.  The scoring was led by Jeff Rodehutskors with  25 points and 18 rebounds and Jag Gill with 15 points and 10 rebounds and 8 assists. The JV Lakers still sit at the top of their division standings with a 5-1 record. The Lakers are scheduled for a couple of exhibition games this week.

VARSITY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Lady Lakers were pleased to host the 30th annual Invitational Tournament this weekend. The team won 2 of 3 games to finish in second place. They opened with a hard fought win over Brooks, in front of the student body. On Saturday the girls received a lesson from the #1 team in the province, St. Albert, losing badly. The team regained their composure and played very well to beat Crescent Heights, of Medicine Hat, 73-49. The entire team played well and it may have been our best game of the year. Player of the Game awards were presented to Yas Saghir, Rachel Cooke and Kendall Armstrong. All-star awards were presented to Yas and Rachel. We have been struggling with injuries the past three weeks and are starting to get healthy. We look forward to the return of senior guard, Aimee Wilson, one of the top players in the province. The team has a bye in league play this week, but travels to Spruce Grove, this weekend, for a tough tournament.

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
The Lakers had a busy week of basketball with four games in four days. Taking on the Mustangs from George McDougall, in league play on Wednesday, the Lakers gutted out a physical 91-84 win. In a contrast of size and speed, the Lakers’ speed eventually wore down the Mustangs. Yuvraj Hundal led the way with a huge 28 points. Riley Lenci chipped in with 20. On the weekend the Lakers competed in the competitive Redmen Invitational Tournament at Western Canada High School.
In the first round the Lakers took on the host Redmen in front of a packed gymnasium. The Lakers ended up dropping a back and forth game 74-70. Hundal led the way again with 26 while Charnjot Gill added 16. Moving to the consolation side, the Lakers played Riffle out of Regina. In a score that was closer than the game really was, the Lakers won 89-75. Gill led the way with 27 points. In the consolation final the Lakers took on the ranked 4A Bishop McNally Wolves. In a fast paced up and down game the Lakers prevailed 104-101. Tyis Yellowhorn was named player of the game with 22 points. Hundal added 25, Gill with 17, Lenci with 16 and Jherald Gonzales with 14. The Lakers travel to Okotoks this week to participate in Falcons Classic at Foothils Composite. The #6 provincially ranked Lakers take on #4 Crescent Heights from Medicine Hat in the first round.

[box]GIRLS’ ATHLETE OF THE WEEK-KENDALL ARMSTRONG
Kendall has been playing very well as a starting guard for the Lady Lakers. With injuries she has had to step in and play over 30 minutes a game. Her relentless energy and attitude are contagious to the team. She excels at press defense and three point shooting. Last week she hit six three point shots and this past weekend scored the rare 4 point play.[/box] [box]BOYS’ ATHLETE OF THE WEEK-JEFF RODEHUTSKORS
This grade 9 student- athlete, from Indus, has averaged 24.5 points 14 rebounds 4 blocks and 34 minutes of floor time per game over the season. His strong scoring, defensive presence and determination has helped lead the JV Lakers to where they are right now with a 5-1 record in league play. His play is instrumental to teh success of the JV Lakers.[/box]
