CURLING
Curling at Chestermere High has reached its busiest time of the year. This past week athletes were able to compete in the Rocky View Divisional Bonspiel, and, this weekend, one of our teams is able to continue to the South Central Zones play downs. Practices for Curlers started in mid-November. Four teams were returning from previous years; in addition there were 10 athletes joining us for the first time. Students have attended practice each week under the guidance of the coaching team of Wolfgang Janke, Margie Bremer and Marianne Sutcliffe.
At the Divisionals, the athletes enjoyed two great days of curling and team camaraderie. Each team was able to play a minimum of two games, with one of the boys’ teams advancing to the medal round: Clayton Baxter (skip), Dallas Brocklesby (3rd), Kaden Clouston (2nd), Kevin Wolff (lead). In the exciting “A” final the boys tied the game in the last end but came up just short in the tie breaking draw to the button. Although this team was not able to recapture the trophy, they did however earn the opportunity to be one of three teams representing Rockyview Schools in Drumheller at the South Central Zones Bonspiel. Congratulations on the silver medal. Congratualtions to all of the coaches and athletes.

JV BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Chestermere JV Lakers played in the Super South Basketball Tournament in Medicine Hat on the weekend. The weekend was a very good learning experience for the team. The team finished with a 1-3 record and ended up finishing 8th out of 16 teams. They started with a win in the first game, against the host school Crescent Heights 87-42. The team was led by the defensive efforts of Jake Layton and Mitch Marjoram and the offensive leadership of Ali Abdughani. The second game was against the Magrath Zeniths. The Lakers came out slow and never gained the lead losing 82-54. The third game was a close loss against the Cochrane Cobras 88-73. Bryce Dunaway led the way with 26 points and 12 rebounds. In the final game the Lakers played against the other host school, the McCoy Colts. The game was close form start to finish but the team came up a bit short with final score, 62-54. Jeff Rodehutskors and Jag Gill led the Lakers with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Great experience and basketball was had by the team over the weekend. The Lakers next opponent is a league game at home on Wednesday, February 6th against the George MacDougall Mustangs.
VARSITY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Lady Lakers had a tough weekend at the competitive St. Albert Tournament on the weekend. The team worked hard but lost games to Grande Prairie, Morinville and Wetaskiwin. With three regular players out of the lineup, due to injuries, the team was in tough, every game. The positive side of it was that it helped our team become tougher and more resilient. As well, some team members gained valuable game experience, which will help the team in the stretch drive in three weeks. Yasmene Saghir led the way leading the team in rebounding and scoring. Kendall Armstrong was a workhorse on the court and stepped up her play, hiting six threes in the final game. This week the girls travel to Airdrie to take on the George Mc Dougall Mustangs in league action. The team looks forward to hosting the 30th annual Lady Lakers Invitational, this weekend.
VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL
The Varsity Boys travelled to Medicine Hat over the weekend to participate in the 16 team Super South tournament. The first round matchup saw the Lakers against Forest Lawn. Building a 25 point lead going into the third quarter the Lakers began to give the game away. With turnovers becoming a problem, the Lakers ended up with a disapointing 99-97 loss. The Lakers were led by Riley Lenci with 8 three pointers and 28 points. Charnjot Gill was impressive with his penetration and 25 points. Playing on the backside of the draw put the Lakers against some weaker teams beating Foremost 87-47, Peacock from Moose Jaw 89-66, and Highwood from High River 74-53. The younger players got some much needed experience and the team was able to work on systems they will need down the stretch. Gill has to be commending for his dominating style of play creating shots not only for himself, but for others as well. The Lakers take on George McDougall in league play and then compete in the Western Canada tournament this weekend.
TEAM OF THE WEEK

The team came up one shot short on winning the gold medal, but have a lot to be proud of.
