CHESTERMERE – The Chestermere Ice Edge Skating Club is starting to make significant gains through some excellent coaching and tough competition. They recently attended the three day StarSkate Championships for Alberta, North West Territories and Nunavut in Rocky Mountain House on March 1st thru to the 3rd.
The Ice Edge Skating coach, Alex Sergeev, indicated the competition was pretty tough but “We did OK and it’s good for the kids to compete at this level”. There were at least 300 skaters taking part in the competition.
Alex’s daughter Ekaterina Sergeev was just 2 points away from obtaining a Gold medal at the event and settled for a Silver – not too shabby. There were 5 young ladies from the Ice Edge Skating Club that entered the competition. Saxon Heath in the Pre-preliminary placed 10th ,Natalie Miller placed 9th in the Pre- preliminary, Jennie Vuong took a 9th place finish in the Preliminary and Rebecca David finished up in 21st place in her event. The results for Ekaterina Sergeeva were so close to taking home the gold. It’s like a triathlon in skating as she finished 1st in Creative skills, 1st in Interpretive, 4th in the Freeskate and ended up 2nd overall. Some great results for such a young group of talented girls.
The Chestermere Ice Edge Skating Club is once again putting on an Ice Show, March 17th at the Chestermere Recreation Centre starting at 12:30 and going until 2:00 PM. If you’re into skating, don’t miss this event which promises to be spectacular. The 1 ½ hour show will have members from the Snowflake II group, 3 adults for the solo skate and 9 members for the finale.
If you just can’t get enough skate time you might want to check out the programs they have to offer at the Rec Centre. In case you’re not aware, you can skate right into August at the rinks in one of the summer camps for hockey players.
