Chestermere – The Bike Park Committee is pleased to reveal the design for the Bike Skills Park that will be located in Rainbow Falls. Construction on the 3.4 acre park will begin soon and feature a skills loop, pump track, trails, pathways, benches and landscaping.
“The Town’s last community survey results showed that an overwhelming percentage of our community thinks being active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle,” said Mayor Patricia Matthews. “This park will provide that opportunity to residents of all ages and we’re very excited to see this project underway. ”
In March, approximately 40 community members attended a workshop to help design the bike park. The design has since been refined by the Bike Park Committee and will contain the following features:
- Large Pump Track – This will be a multidirectional trail with large rolling dirt features that allows even beginner riders to navigate through the path without pedaling.
- Skills Loop – This will be a learning trail area with regularly placed skill stations designed to help riders build skills for the flow trails.
- Flow Trails – These are one way, downhill trails that have a combination of hills, jumps and drops. There will be trails for a variety of skill levels, from beginner to expert.
- Landscaping – Trees and plants native to the area will be used to landscape the park.
- Pathways – Pathways will connect the different park elements together, and tie in with existing pathways.
- Benches, Picnic Tables, Garbage and Recycle Bins – These will be placed strategically around the park to ensure families have a clean and safe environment to enjoy the park together.
“What began as a small local youth group’s dream, a park that would provide an outlet for healthy activity, has developed into what will soon become an enviable community gathering space for all,” said Patty Sproule, Director of Community Services for the Town. “Community members working together to build our capacity for connection truly possess the power to turn dreams into reality.”
Construction of the Bike Park will begin this summer and will be built by the Town of Chestermere’s Public Works department and volunteers from the community. The Public Works department will do the rough shaping of hills and installation of technical trail features and volunteers will be able to help with hand shaping the jumps, landscaping and other finishing touches.
