Chestermere’s Ice Edge Skating Club is sending nine athletes from the Star Skate program to the upcoming Winter Icefest Open and The Alberta Winter Games qualifying competition in Airdrie from Nov. 22-24.
The local figure skaters are ages 7 to 15, and eight of the nine will be competing for the first time in the Winter Icefest Open. The ninth athlete, 15 year old Ekaterina Sergueev will be trying out to qualify for a chance to compete in the Alberta Winter Games. The two competitions will be held simultaneously over the busy weekend. These figure skaters train up to 4 days a week including off ice dry land training.
Ice Edge’s Head Coach is Alex Sergueev brings a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge to the club. He became a professional figure skater in his home country of Russia in the 1980’s. From there he went on to coach throughout Europe and the U.S., eventually coming to Canada in 2006. He holds a Skate Canada NCCP Level 2 certification and is currently working toward his level 3.
Besides Star Skate, Ice Edge also offers Can Skate, a learn to skate program for kids; CanPower Skate, a power skating program geared toward hockey and ringette players that focuses on skating skills; and Adult Skate, which provides adult skaters of all levels a chance to become involved in figure skating.
Ice Edge Skating Club will be hosting a Christmas Recital at the Chestermere Rec Centre on December 15 at 12:45pm. This fun and festive event is open to the public and everyone is invited to come out and enjoy these talented skaters.
