Would you believe that Chestermere Minor Hockey has not had a Provincial Champion amongst its teams in 13 years?
The year 2000 proved to be the year for the Atom C team in Chestermere. We all know that 13 is seen as an unlucky number but the Atom 1 team has just proven that this superstition is just that, a superstition!
After winning a playdown against Brooks, The Chestermere Laker Atom 1 team earned the chance to represent Hockey Alberta’s Zone 6 in the Alberta Atom AA Minor Provincial tournament held in Leduc this past weekend, March 15-17. The Tournament had teams representing 9 zones across Alberta from communities similar in size to Chestermere. The Boys, ages 9 to 11 came away with the gold going undefeated in 6 games over 3 days. The team defeated challengers from Lethbridge, Okotoks, Calgary, Edmonton, and finally Sylvan Lake. The final game was decided with a convincing 6-1 score after the boys burst out to an early 4-0 lead in the first period, and added one more in both the second and the third. The 6-1 victory was well earned after a hard fought semi-final 4-3 victory over Edmonton earlier in the day; and a previous close battle with Sylvan Lake during round robin play.
This proud bunch of young men represented Chestermere well both on the ice and off. They continue their regular league finals this upcoming weekend against Lethbridge. Win or lose there, they remain Provincial Champions.
Well Done Atom 1!
