Thanks to the generosity of EPCOR, the town of Chestermere will be sporting 81 meters of mural on the grey cement building most of us just ignore as we drive east on Chestermere Boulevard into town past Rainbow Road. This is Lift Station #10, part of our water/sewage system (edited here for correction July 24 – JP) Lift Station #10 is owned by CUI.
In January 2013, The Chestermere Historical Foundation got permission to enter into a partnership with EPCOR to provide murals. Courtesy of the then manager Dan Skidmore, $10 000 was made available for this project as a gift from EPCOR to the people of Chestermere. Dan’s one request — that the photos used reflect an aspect of the lake or water. Donated personal photos from the Clarke and Lowney families as well as The Glenbow Museum Archives do just that.
Final approval was received from town Council and CUI in June, and the murals will be applied by SignCraft Digital the week of July 22nd. Try to pretend you can’t see them, as the official unveiling and celebration of this project will be held on the patio of the Town of Chestermere Public Library, July 27th 2013. Join the CHF and special guests at 11:00am with refreshments to follow. It would be too dangerous for us to line up on Chestermere Boulevard for the event–and it would require a very large cover to keep them under wraps until the 27th!
A bonus for the town in having the murals completed this summer is that among the eight criteria for judging the upcoming Communities in Bloom competition August 9th one is a heritage component. www.communitiesinbloom.ca
So, step away from WaterFest for a few moments to join the CHF in celebrating this first ever mural project for the citizens of Chestermere.
If Saturday is a hot day, get out of the sun for a few minutes after the unveiling, and view the CHF artifact display recently installed in the library. Thanks to the Chestermere Library, a Federal New Horizons Grant, and the local and Calgary donors for contributing some interesting and significant items for public viewing.
