Quilts and LEGO®–Two Popular Prize Competitions Return

What do quilting and building LEGO® have in common? — they were hobbies enjoyed by two very loved and fondly remembered Chestermere citizens.

In the fall of 2009 Jane Carlyle, long-time resident, succumbed to cancer. Her passion, outside of her family–was quilting. She created wonderful pieces that are treasured by those who are lucky enough to own them. In Jane’s memory, husband Jim, and daughters Katherine and Heather have provided $150 in prize money for the past four years for the Chestermere Country Fair Red Ribbon Competition # 611 Machine quilted and machine stitched quilt.

And as for LEGO®, well that was the favourite pastime of Craig Lawrence. Craig Chestermere Town Planner and volunteer firefighter, was tragically killed in a car accident shortly before he was to move into his Chestermere home with his wife Erin. In Craig’s memory the Chestermere Volunteer Fire Fighters, Town of Chestermere and the Bralichs ( Erin’s family) created a memorial prize for the best LEGO® emergency vehicle. That competition is #759 and one can enter a fire truck, ambulance, police car, helicopter or other emergency vehicle you have made out of LEGO®. ( note there is a maximum size and number of pieces per entry this year).

Both competitions are open to adults and children–anyone can enter. We have had some of the best quilts in the region in the quilt competition and last year the LEGO® entries quite filled the table set aside for this competition. So, if either of these leisure activities is in your life or your friend’s or maybe someone in your family, step up and put your talent to the test–for money! First prize $50, second prize $30 and third prize $20 for LEGO® and $70, $50 and $30 for the quilt prize. Entries are taken in Friday September 13th, 11am to 6pm and results can be viewed starting 10am on September 14th in the Chestermere Curling Rink. There is security for all entries, the judging area is locked on Friday evening after the judging. The quilts will be carefully monitored thanks to the Lakeside Quilt Guild in their display on the stage in the hall.

For more information about either competition find the Chestermere Country Fair Red Ribbon booklet on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/#!/ChestermereCountryFair or pick one up at the Town Office or CRCA office.
