Why vote for School Trustees?

As a candidate for Calgary Catholic School District Trustee there are two questions I am hearing consistently from constituents: What do school trustees do? I don’t have kids in school so why would I vote for school trustees?

Alberta school boards help shape the future of local communities by governing the education of young people. The provincial government, through the minister of education, grants school boards the authority to make decisions regarding the direction and quality of local public education. Accountability to the public is entrenched through the election of local school board trustees every four years. A key responsibility for trustees is to stay in touch with community stakeholders so that they understand, and reflect in their decision-making, what all citizens’ value and want from their local public schools.

As electors in Alberta we all have the right to help choose the people who will serve on school board by casting a ballot for school trustee when you vote in the upcoming October 21 election. When it comes to making decisions about public education, school boards represent all Albertans. Voting for school board trustees on Election Day is important because the school board makes decisions that affect the community’s economic, social and cultural life. School board policies and decisions have a tremendous impact on the local community, whether residents have children in school or not. That’s why it’s important to hear from the whole community at the ballot box.

Incumbent Trustee, Bev LaPeare, has been acclaimed for Rocky View Schools for Ward 2 – Chestermere, Langdon, Indus areas. In the October 21, 2013 municipal election you will have the opportunity to vote for your Separate (Calgary Catholic School District) Trustee. What you need to know is that Calgary Catholic School Trustee voting is a separate ballot. Why is this? Because Calgary Catholic School District is part of the City of Calgary so voting for our trustees is managed by the City of Calgary electoral office. Voting for Councilors is managed by the local electoral office. Therefore there are two ballots; one for the Councilors and one for Separate School Trustee.
Voting stations for Calgary Catholic School District Trustee wards 9,10, and Chestermere will be at:
960 Chestermere Recreation Centre, 201 West Chestermere Drive
961 Langdon IOOF Hall, Hwy 797 between Dead Horse Rd and Hwy 560
962 Indus Recreational Complex, Hwy 791 (Indus Rd)
Refer to the City of Calgary elections notice for details on boundaries and voting locations. As a Calgary Catholic School District elector you can also vote for your trustee at any advance poll in Calgary.

Remember we all have a voice in setting the direction for education of our future citizens. Choose to support them and vote for your trustee on October 21st.
