Working hard trying my hand at being a reporter for the day

On Wednesday November 5th, grade 9 students from Chestermere Lake Middle School, got the incredible opportunity to ditch school and spend the day shadowing a parent or guardian on their day of work. I was lucky enough to land the chance of spending an exciting day with my mom, Michelle Young, reporter for the Chestermere Anchor.

Before heading out to some meetings, my mom explained how it all works. From what questions to ask, what questions not to ask and the back end of how the Chestermere Anchor gets put together. Then with notebook and camera in hand, we headed out.

On my journey, we had a meeting at the local Starbucks and met with the project manager of the upcoming Best Western Plus hotel where a variety of topics were discussed surrounding the new addition. We then ventured to The Garden of Peace cemetery where we took part in a very special Remembrance ceremony. Our last stop of the day was a tour of the fire hall where we learned more about their job. The tour was very exciting as we got to see all the different rooms and resources that it has to offer. My favorite part was when we went to the garage and saw all the different types of fire trucks and other vehicles that they use. The tour was cut off there as they got a call and had to go into action. I really enjoyed all three meetings and seeing how different meetings were handled.

A few of my classmates wanted to share their experiences as well. Here’s what some other students said about their day. “My mom is an executive assistant and I thought it was interesting to see the different kinds of jobs that are out there,” said Robyn Height a grade 9 student at Chestermere Lake Middle School. Another student said ” My mom works for the Calgary food and drug executives and I really enjoy going to work with her whenever I can and take your kid to work day has no exception”.

I really enjoyed the experience and learning more about journalism and about the community. Getting to talk to people and learn more about what they do, what’s going on it town and about different ways that things are done, i.e. Building a hotel. I loved going places and interviewing people it was really fun and I am definitely going to look into going into journalism for my career.
