When listing the things that he has accomplished in his life, long time Chestermere resident Brian Wood can now add gold medalist.
At the 2014 Canada 55 Plus Games that were held in Strathcona County August 27th – 30th, Brian and his team mates won a gold medal in Carpet Bowling.
Although the gold medal is an amazing accomplishment, this is not Mr. Woods’ only success in the sport he loves. He has been an Alberta 55 plus member since 2008 and participated in events in the 2010 Canada Games, the 2011 Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games, the 2011 Alberta 55 Plus Summer games and the 2013 Alberta 55 Plus Summer games.
Brian then continued to earn the Gold Medal in the 2013 Alberta 55 Plus Winter games. It was then that he and the rest of his team mates went on to win the gold medal in the 2014 Canada Games.
Although Mr. Wood is from Chestermere, he says that he is very thankful that his fellow team mates – all from Airdrie – invited him to participate on their team.
“You don’t go into this wanting to win a gold medal. You go into it wanting to have fun. Winning the medal is just the bonus” explained Mr. Wood.
When asked where he keeps his gold medal, Mr. Wood humbly responded “in my trophy case”.
The Canada 55 Plus Games were first held in Regina in 1998 with the main focus being to sponsor wellness among Canadians that are 55 years of age and older. These games are not to be considered as sporting events as they are just as mentally challenging as they are physically. Congratulations Mr. Wood. You make Chestermere proud!
