When it was announced earlier this year that the talented and treasured Candie Schmidt was moving away from Chestermere, the future of the Children’s Musical Theatre program at the Chestermere Rec Centre was bleak. But in true theatrical fashion, with the belief of ‘the show must go on’ that is exactly what happened.
With the talent of Artistic Program Director Steve McMullen and the help of Melanie Porter and Jody Sikora, the ‘Broadway Kids’ came to life and on December 7th had their debut performance to a crowd of family and friends.
The Broadway Kids consists of forty performers ranging in age from four to seventeen. With only nine weeks under their belt so far, the young stars performed a variety of classics from popular Broadway musicals including “Sunny Side of the Street” and “Singin’ In The Rain”.
A special thank you goes out to Val Yanke of the Chestermere Co-Operators Insurance for donating $100 that covered the refreshments and cakes for the after party.
The program is now on break for the holidays, but will kick off a brand new session in January. If you have a youngster that is interested, please email broadwaykids@shaw.ca
