Members of the Calgary Stetson Show Band returned home to Calgary on Saturday morning, August 9th, fresh from their award winning performances at the World Association of Marching Show Bands (WAMSB) World Championships in Braganca Paulista, Brazil.
The Stetsons, competed head to head with 22 bands from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Guatemala, Poland, Uruguay and Venezuela – including the 5 time World Champion Calgary Stampede Show Band – coming away with a first place win in the Parade Competition, a second place win in the coveted Field Show Event and a third place win in the Drum Battle. In addition to earning the title of World Champions in the parade competition, the members set multiple personal records that included receiving the highest performance scores in the band’s history.
The 94 members of the Stetsons consist of students from Calgary and the surrounding area. They are the Sr. High School level ensemble in the Bands of Calgary program which also includes the Calgary Round-Up Band and the Calgary Stampede Show Band.
Friends and family went to the Calgary Airport on Saturday to welcome home the young champions.
Formed in September 1988 as a high-energy marching show band for Calgary and area Senior High School students, the Calgary Stetson Show Band offers opportunities for personal development, advanced musicianship, performance, and travel. In their distinct black and gold uniforms, the band proudly represents Calgary, Alberta, and Canada with a unique combination of tradition and innovation.
