On Sunday May 11, Mother’s Day, 140 kids from Chestermere Minor Hockey played in their own version of the 2014 Worlds Longest Hockey Game. The Game was organized by local 12 yr old Steen Wallin, who really wanted to do something to support the big guys in their Hockey Marathon.
He approached Alex Halat and asked if he could help out by organizing a mini marathon game for local kids and help to raise funds and awareness for the 2014 Hockey Marathon. Steen and his group of volunteers were really busy collecting registrations, organizing teams and jerseys and prize donations in order to play 4 games and raise money alongside the 2014 Hockey Marathon.
WHY he is doing this: ” I thought it would be nice to get involved and help raise some more money to support the Hockey Marathon. I think it is very important to help out other kids who aren’t as fortunate or may need support from the Children’s Hospital.
WHY he came up with the idea – “I felt I could get my two brothers and some of our friends involved so I organized a Kids 2014 Worlds Longest Hockey Game. I played in the kids game 2 years ago and thought it was really awesome how they put it together, so this year I realized how I could get more kids involved this time. We have 140 kids from CMHA playing in 4 – 2 hour games from Tyke to Peewee. I have collected prizes from many generous donors which will be used in the Chuck- A- Puck Fundraiser after each game. My original fundraising goal was $1500 but I believe we can double that.
The day started off at 8:00 with 40 tyke (5-6 yr olds) players playing a 90 min game. Followed by 2 hr games for Novice (7-8), Atom (9-10) and then the Peewees (11-12). Each game was followed by a Wildly popular CHUCK A PUCK. Numbered pucks were sold 1 for $5, or 3 for $10 and at the conclusion of each game, pucks were chucked onto the ice and the 5 pucks closest to the 5 dots between the bluelines won at least one of the over $2000 of donated prizes!!
On several occasions the players from the big game skated out on the ice to pose for pictures with the kids.
