Funded by TD Canada Trust, the Chestermere Public Libraries Summer Reading Program runs from June 23 to August 29, 2014. 486 youth and parents have already signed up and right up until 4:59pm on August 29th, so can you, and receive a package specifically for your age group. There are plenty of activities and prizes and you can enter the draw for the prizes on display every time you visit the library. Two of the grand prizes are Kobo Touch eReaders! The draw will be on September 2nd and the winners will be contacted the same day. This Summer Reading Program is held all across Canada. Two years ago they started including adults in the program and one of the baskets is even geared to the adults; after all, they spend significant slices of time reading with their children.
This summer reading program is important because it prevents the summer slide – we have included a piece from a website about the summer slide for you.
‘Experts agree that children who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward. According to the authors of a report from the National Summer Learning Association: "A conservative estimate of lost instructional time is approximately two months or roughly 22 percent of the school year…. It’s common for teachers to spend at least a month re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer. That month of re-teaching eliminates a month that could have been spent on teaching new information and skills."’
Minecraft is now at the library! It’s a fun game where you can build houses, castles, be a farmer, and a warrior; it’s a way for kids to have fun and connect with each other in the library and through the Marigold System. But, you can’t use your own ID from home – it simply does not work on their server.
Some of you might be shocked that the library is promoting video games but they are just as important as books. They promote creativity and are another place in the community to have fun.
August 5th is the launch of the E-Reader lending program. You can put one on hold just like a book.
Teen Summer Library Experience – on website, online activities and you get prizes for completing activities – including an ipod. The age limit for the Teen Summer Library Experience is 12 and up.
In the fall they are looking forward to the book clubs starting again so start dusting off those books and preparing some tasty refreshment recipes.
The Chestermere Public Library looks forward to seeing everyone stop by this summer, come use the computers, read a book, magazine, come watch a movie on Tuesday, or play Minecraft; it’s up to you.
