Calling all Newfoundlanders, start making your Ugly Stick and pull out the old recipes. On Sunday, January 19th from 5 – 8 pm at the Rec Centre, everyone is invited to enjoy East Coast Cuisine, sing and play along with traditional music, dance a Newfoundland jig and maybe get a visit from some mummers during a Newfie Kitchen Party Potluck.
The celebration is hosted by Chestermere Walks who have been virtually walking around Newfoundland and tracking their steps along the way. If you want to participate in the virtual walk, you can still log in for the Newfie Trek at www.chestermerewalks.ca to get started. Don’t have a pedometer to count your steps? Chestermere Walks would be happy to give you one donated by Alberta Health Services for this program, they are available at the Rec Centre.
Chestermere Walks is asking for help for the flatlanders to organize a proper kitchen party and they are still in need of some Easterners to help with ideas for the kitchen party as well as some musicians for the jam. There is a planning meeting open to the public on Thursday, Jan 9th at noon at the Rec Centre or you can drop then an email at: recreation@chestermerecrca.com.
According to Vicki Klinger; Recreational Coordinator at CRCA, the Kitchen Party has been a long standing tradition for the people of Newfoundland and the Maritimes. For many years, they have been enjoying the company of friends and family, delicious food and great music in this manner. It is a coming together of the community of friends and relatives in an informal and therefore personal manner.
Historically, people who played instruments brought them along to the Kitchen Party and ‘jammed together’, in the spirit of connectedness so if you do have an instrument they invite you to please bring it along. And if anyone wants to make and bring along an Ugly Stick, many of the guests will be fascinated. The Kitchen Party will provide the opportunity to experience and enjoy some Newfoundland and Maritime culture.
It will be a party you don’t want to miss! Everyone is welcome to attend the potluck which is free but cash donations toward the Walking Program will be accepted.
