May 31 was a big day for Chestermere’s U6 and U8 soccer teams who participated in the Mid-Season Soccer Tournament sponsored by our very own and much-loved Chestermere Tim Horton’s restaurant.
This soccer festival is part of a series of tournaments offered in May and June for these young players. It is offered through a partnership between the communities of Strathmore, Langdon, Indus, Carseland and Chestermere.
According to Vicki Klinger, Recreation Coordinator for the Chestermere Rec Centre, Strathmore does an Ice Breaker Tournament at the beginning of the season in May, Chestermere does the Mid-Season Soccer Festival at the end of May and Langdon organizes the Wind-Up Tournament at the end of June.
“The regular soccer season can be quite short for this age group so we like to take the opportunity to offer additional tournaments for the players so that they have more time to get together to play,” says Klinger.
The tournament hosted the 5 & 6 year olds in the morning and the 7 & 8 year olds in the afternoon. Both groups were treated to healthy snacks with fruit, vegetables, granola and fruit bars. There was no cost for the tournament and everyone received a Tim Horton’s medal for their participation.
The day’s events were a huge success filled with both sun and fun. “The weather was perfect, sunny with just enough breeze to keep the kids cool and the mosquitos at a minimum!” boasts Klinger.
To the children’s delight, Andrew Marriott, owner of the Chestermere Tim Horton’s took the time to come out and cheer on the players and of course he shared some timbit treats with everyone. Marriott explains that Tim Hortons is proud to support Timbits sports all across Canada and internationally, “In Canada Timbits soccer players now exceed over 100,000 kids enjoying a great outdoor sport, promoting physical fitness and team play,” says Marriott.
“In Chestermere we have an amazing group of kids and parents that engage in Timbit sport, I am proud to see so many kids sporting their uniforms on the field and around town”, Marriott adds.
“A special thank you to Tim Horton’s for offering the Timbits Program that provides t-shirts and medals for our players and keeps the cost to participate in the programs reason, also a huge thank you goes out to all of the parent volunteers who help with their child’s team. Without these people, there would be no program!” says Klinger.
