On September 9th 1989 the first Chestermere Country Fair was held. The idea of having a fair came from Helga Dressel and Ken Fraser. They and the Chestermere Ag Society, believed that this type of event would bring together the urban and rural roots of the community. And it has.
Over the past twenty five years the Fun Country Riders have added to the festivities and county feel with their annual gymkhana. www.funcountryriders.com
The parades, dances, spaghetti eating contests, dunk tanks, 4-H demonstrations ( rabbit, and beef) heavy house pulls, pet shows, wine and beer competitions, slow pitch tournaments, Red Ribbon Competition and the farmers’ markets have made for even more fun, competition and camaraderie.
For this very special year, the Fair and Red Ribbon have add new and exciting agricultural events and Red Ribbon competitions, such as the honey competition, zucchini car races, a pillow case challenge, and four new handicraft and floral competitions that must have a 25th Anniversary theme; best decorated cake, best flower arrangement, quilt block with your own theme that celebrates the anniversary and what makes Chestermere special to you. Thanks to the Chestermere Ag Society for special prizes for these celebration categories. The Red Ribbon and Fair Committees hope that these new events will draw in even more families and visitors to this one of a kind event–one that has sadly been dying out in small communities all over Alberta.
Chestermere is a unique community. The Chestermere Country Fair has been and will continue to be a reminder of the agricultural roots of this lakeside, urban/rural community for many more years to come.
