The mystery this time is ‘where are the photos of West Park Drive?’ This street in Chestermere is now part of the new Mattamy subdivision but it previously was a lot longer, stretching from the south at John Peake Park up to its northern end at the junction of Rainbow Road and Highway #1. It was often used as a dusty yet scenic short cut to get out of Chestermere! These photos show two views of West Park Drive. Why pursue this mystery? The Chestermere Historical Foundation has been asked by Mattamy Homes and the Town of Chestermere to search out some photographs of this road. How much more fun and interesting to have some photos of people, families, dogs, or activities that took place along this stretch, rather than just the overhead views that you see here. Photographs will be used for a special sign that will be placed in the park area and off leash dog walking area, that now covers this former road. John Peake Park was also the site of a campground back in the 60s and 70s. We don’t have many old buildings or architectural artifacts from the early days–but we can highlight the early days in pictures. This has already happened with two mural projects. Do you have some good memories of using the park, campground or area along this road? Any photos from you, your neighbours or your relatives who once lived here would be much appreciated–head up to the attic right now, or call Aunt Jean and Grandpa Fred!
Please contact the CHF via the webpage at www.chestermerehistory.org or call 403 272 3764 . And if you missed Mystery #1 and Mystery #2 you can find them on the CHF webpage. Neither of them are completely solved as yet.
Thank you to Keith Turner for providing these aerial photos to the Chestermere Historical Foundation
