The East Side Wheelers, led by Coach Herbie, forged their way to victory against the Misfits of Mayhem with a score of 152 to 92. The Misfits of Mayhem started strong at the beginning of the derby but once the East Side Wheelers hit their stride there was no stopping them. Jammers of note for the East Side Wheelers were Jet Shark, Slamazon, Bloody Maiden, and Front Page Bruise. But this in no way discredits the efforts of the rest of the team. As they cry in their pre-game mantra ‘team work’ is the way to go.
Misfits of Mayhem were no slouches though; especially not Diesel Duchess, a ferocious blocker who wasn’t afraid to get in the face of and the way of the opposing jammers, and Gypsy Jo, a jammer that seemed to evade the East Side Wheeler pack with no difficulty at all.
There was one casualty the entire game and it was to the ankle of Candy Calvera. Unfortunately Calvera was unable to play in any more jams but it didn’t prevent her team from trouncing the Misfits of Mayhem.
And thank you to everyone that helped set up the derby, including the referees: Jenn U Whine, Sailor Cherry, Peat Smoke, Lil Red in Da Hood, Xenomorph, Panty Bandit, Red De Lizcious, and Graffy. And another thanks to all the NSO’s (non-skating officials) Sweet Plea & Masquerade, and the guest announcer Papa Rozza.
The East Side Wheelers have been together as a team since July of 2013. Some of the members play for other teams in Calgary and some are Indus’ own skaters. Coach Herbie used to coach roller derby’s up in Red Deer for about a year and a half before moving to Indus and starting up a team. At first it was just a practice but then it evolved into a team.
Coach Herbie finds that a flat roller derby rink is a lot better and easier to skate on. Apparently you need a permanent stilted rink otherwise it can take up to 7 or 8 hours to set it up for a single event.
According to Coach Herbie skaters soaring off the track and into the crowd are a very rare occurrence and the while injuries that occur during a derby are usually significant, the most common are damaged ankles.
But, the East Side Wheelers only sustained one such injury and still carried through to a fantastic win! Team work!
