We are almost two months into the new year and it’s about that time to check in. Are you still working towards your fitness goals for 2014?
I have had many questions from clients and potential clients about joining a gym. Buying a gym membership is one way that many people motivate themselves to exercise. If a membership will get you committed to moving, go for it. However, don’t be lead to believe that a gym is the only way to get a good workout
Here are some things to think about before joining a gym.
Pros of Joining a Gym
Equipment – Many gyms have lots of exercise equipment and machines that make it easy to target different areas of your body. Variety of equipment can help keep your workouts interesting.
Resources – Some gyms have personal trainers and certified instructors on staff. If you are new to working out or need an extra push, a trainer or instructor is the person to ask. A trainer will help keep you motivated and accountable and ensure you get the most out of your membership by designing an exercise and diet program. Before joining the gym, find out what resources are available to you and if there are additional costs for these resources.
Fitness Classes – Classes are a good way to stay motivated have fun with fitness. Many gyms will offer a variety of classes including cardio, strength, yoga or dance for different interests.
Support – At the gym you are surrounded by active people who are interested in fitness. Share in their enthusiasm and make some friends.
Commitment – A membership in the form of a contract can be a pro or a con of joining a gym. Getting your money’s worth out of your membership may be the motivator you need to get you off the couch and into an exercise program.
Cons of Joining a Gym
Privacy – Gyms are busy places. You will be working out in front of other people. If you are already insecure about your fitness level or inability this could be a huge issue. While I believe there is no reason for anyone to ever feel self-conscious in the gym I do understand how intimidating it can be especially for someone new to fitness. Check out the gym atmosphere first and remember the atmosphere changes at different times of the day so visit the gym at the time you expect to be there to workout. Chance are if you are very uncomfortable in your first visit that feeling won’t change and your discomfort will lead to excuses to avoid the gym and your fitness.
Cleanliness – Again, gyms are busy places and as a result a breeding ground for germs. Everyone is sweating and not everyone remembers to wipe down the equipment when they are done. Expect to look after your own health while at the gym and bring your own towels, flip flops for showers and wipe down equipment before and after use.
Costs – Gym memberships can be daily, monthly or yearly and typically costs are determined by your commitment level and with membership fees total costs can be very expensive. Be prepared to shop costs around and ask for trial memberships to check out the gym before you commit.
Contracts – This should go without saying for anything but always read the small print before signing and understand what your monthly or yearly fee includes. Also inquire about the cancellation policy in case you change your mind.
Gyms can be a great place to be and can offer all that you need to reach your fitness goals. At the same time, gyms are not for everyone and a gym membership can be a complete waste of your hard earned money if it’s not for you. Do you homework, check out the facilities available and consider your preferences before deciding to join a gym.
