Jumpstart says that participation in organized sport and recreation increased a child’s chance for success in life; building self-confidence, self esteem, leadership, strength and futures.

In an effort to ensure all kids have the opportunity to participate in organized recreational activity, Community Services of Chestermere has teamed up with Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program to help financially disadvantaged kids between the ages of 4-18 participate in organized sport and recreation by covering registration, equipment and transportation costs.
Danielle Fermin, Community Resource Centre Coordinator for Community Services in Chestermere, says that our community is very fortunate to have this program available locally. “The support of this program will allow many local children the opportunity to explore recreational options that would not otherwise be available to them.”
“For many families, sports are just too cost prohibitive, leaving many kids out,” says Fermin, who adds that funding is available for any sport or recreational activity as long as it is organized and lasts for at least 5 weeks of 5 consecutive days.
There are two enrollment periods per year and families can apply at any time. The deadline for the first term is June and each child is eligible for up to $300 per term.
A simple application process is handled right here in Chestermere saving families from the commute into Calgary to seek funding. “The benefit of the new local chapter is that we are familiar with local opportunities and can connect easily with recreational coordinators so applicants do not have to go into Calgary to talk to someone who does not know what Chestermere offers,” says Fermin.
All families have to do is contact Community Services located at Town Hall to complete an assessment form or to find out about qualification allowances for funding.
Fermin is most excited about this program because for some kids, the program gives them the chance to experience a sport for the very first time and for others, it is the boost they need to continue with an activity they love. “This allows children the opportunity to explore other options than those previously open to them which can help them to stay active and engaged.”
Canadian Tire Jumpstart is a national charitable program launched in 2005 because according to studies, one in three Canadian families cannot afford to enrol their children in sports and recreational activities because of financial barriers. Jumpstart is dedicated to removing these barriers so kids can get in the game.
