With last year’s success in the Communities in Bloom provincial competition you have all heard that Chestermere will now be competing on the national stage for the 2014 award. The Chestermere Historical Foundation is pleased to be participating in the historical component of this competition. During the morning of the competition on July 25th, many of the Founders of the Summer Village of Chestermere Lake will be accompanying the judges as they view Founders Point, the small park just near the east side of the bridge on Chestermere Boulevard. Elaine Peake will be speaking to the judges about the history of the village and town and how many little towns in Western Canada can say that most of their Founders are all still alive and well! Later in the day, Kay Clarke will be presenting to the judges on some of the history of the lake itself and surrounding environs. Kay’s mother’s family the MacKenzies, farmed just southeast of the present town limits and today, Kay and her husband Glenn live in the MacKenzie family home. If you go to page 202 in Chestermere a Home for All Seasons, you will see a picture of Chestermere Station, on the platform is Kay’s grandma Katherine, holding Kay’s mother Agnes’s hand. So that is how the Historical Foundation will be contributing to what we all hope will be a great placing of Chestermere in the National CIB competition. But everyone can participate! Pick up one of the CIB signs, put it out in your yard, make sure your yard looks spiffy on July 25th! The judges drive around the town to get a feel for the commitment of citizens, their civic pride and how they make their town beautiful and a wonderful place to live.
