On Your Mark, Get Set….Run!

The sun was shining and only a few unthreatening clouds dotted the sky as the runners of the half marathon, 5K, and 11K gathered at the parking lot of the Chestermere Recreational Center to register for the annual Loop Around the Lake Run, coordinated by Bernard Maillet.
As the clock ticked closer to 8 am, Mr. Maillet called the runners of the half marathon over to the start line and explained the route and the signs and hazards to watch out for. Then, after the clock was set, he gave the all clear for handycyclist Nolan Wiebe to start the run. As soon as Mr. Wiebe coasted out of the parking lot the signal was given for the rest of the half marathoners to follow.
For those of you who don’t know about Nolan Wiebe, he is a man who was born with spina-bifida and is confined to his wheelchair most of the time but this doesn’t stop him from being a natural athlete and competing in this run. If he can do it – so can the rest of us….yes, keep telling yourselves that; he’s probably fitter than all of us who are left wheezing in his dust.
I have a question for Bernard Maillet. Do the dogs that compete also need to register and wear numbers? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, even the canine quarter are running in the Loop Around the Lake this year. At least three were counted – a golden retriever, jogging along next to our own Sarah Papke, another dog whose breed I am unsure of but who seemed to be loving the outing, and what seemed to be a giant schnauzer, big, black, and curly.
The Chestermere Loop Around the Lake is a fundraiser with proceeds benefiting the Chestermere Public Library. And guess what – there were even massages being given following the race.
To all of you who slept in Sunday morning, we’re sorry you missed out on the fresh air, exercise, great running companions, and a free massage. Keep an eye out for the next Loop Around the Lake Run in September; it will be well worth your while.
