Okay, confession….. I Love Football!! Anyone who knows me just spit out their coffee as that is a fact well known by most. What people don’t know is that I love Chestermere Chiefs Football with the 7-10 year olds playing as much as I love watching the CFL even if our jerseys are red!! At the start of the season these kids usually know very little about the game, their heads wobble as they run drills with helmets and many of them are a little apprehensive about the whole thing. Then we watch them develop all season, they learn obscure terms like “hook and waggle” (which is my son’s favorite pattern) “a pick-six” and “the streak”,” the fly” or “the go where the QB lays it all out there” which apparently all mean the same thing! They learn about working together as a team as the quarterback isn’t going to be able to even throw the ball if “the snap” doesn’t work or if “the O-line” can’t block the other team. They learn to use their bodies to tackle and block, to read the other team, and to trust that their teammates have their back. But mostly they learn about working together, having fun and practicing one thing all season until it works.
Last year we had enough players to field 2 teams and kids had the opportunity to play both offence and defense really learning all aspects of the game! I could spend time talking about the low cost, the thrill of playing once a season at McMahon under the lights, or the fun we have when the parents play the players the last practice of the year. I do think my highlight this year came at our banquet. We have a videographer tape Chiefs games throughout the season and they each get a video set to music at year end. This year we played it for them while the parents visited. The camaraderie and laughter from the 37 kids was amazing. They pointed out great plays their teammates had made, cheered when a Touchdown happened, and smiled the whole way through!! WARNING….parents may be subjected to watching film over and over!! Don’t take my word for how much fun Chiefs football is, come out to one (or both) of our FREE training camps on June 8th and June 21st 10am-12pm at the Chestermere Rec Centre, checkout our website http://www.eteamz.com/chestermerechiefsfootball/ like us on Facebook (Chestermere Community Football 2014) or email us at chiefsfootball@shaw.ca and see what we’re all about!
