During the late morning of Wednesday February 12, 2014 the Chestermere RCMP were alerted by the Calgary Police Service of a potentially stolen vehicle being followed from Calgary east into Chestermere along Chestermere Boulevard. Calgary Police Service helicopter “HAWCS” was assisting with the monitoring of this vehicle identified as a grey 2007 Ford F-350 truck. This truck was tracked as it performed a hard turn colliding into a power pole on Rainbow Falls Road at Merganser Road West. This truck was then followed into Chestermere Station where the two suspects abandoned the truck and fled on foot. Numerous members of the Calgary Police Service and Chestermere RCMP were on scene immediately and arrested both suspects without incident.
As the incident had initiated in Calgary both arrested persons were turned over to the Calgary Police Service for all charges. The truck was confirmed stolen from Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The suspects were a 21 year old male and a 17 year old female both from Calgary. There were no injuries arising from this occurrence. Witnesses at the collision scene were very helpful with the identification and arrest of these suspects.
The collision with the power pole resulted in significant damage to the pole requiring Rainbow Falls Road northbound lanes being closed off for several hours as a precaution while repairs were made.
This incident is another example of the close working relationships between the Chestermere RCMP and the Calgary Police Service. It further serves as a reminder of the proximity of Chestermere to the largest city in Alberta and of the potential of criminality entering this community.
